Company Overview

Thank you for your interest in employment opportunities at the San Francisco AIDS Foundation. As one of the world’s largest AIDS service organizations, the Foundation enjoys a leadership role which is unparalleled in the continuing fight to end the HIV pandemic and the human suffering caused by AIDS.

Established in 1982, the San Francisco AIDS Foundation is one of the oldest and largest community-based AIDS service organizations in the United States. The mission of the agency is to end the pandemic and the human suffering caused by HIV. The AIDS Foundation works to achieve that goal by providing direct services to thousands of people living with or at risk for HIV/AIDS, supplying information about HIV treatment and related issues, promoting HIV prevention and awareness in the community, and advocating for sound HIV/AIDS policies at all levels of government.

Services for Clients

The San Francisco AIDS Foundation provides a variety of vital services and programs that are designed to improve the quality of life for people living with HIV/AIDS and to reduce the number of new infections that occur each year.

• The Client Services Department provides a wide range of services to hundreds of people living with HIV/AIDS in San Francisco annually. The department provides one-stop registration and intake for clients to access services through the HIV Services Partnership, which includes the San Francisco AIDS Foundation, the USCF AIDS Health Project, and Shanti. Highly skilled client advocates provide critical information, linkages to essential community support services and medical care, and advocacy to help clients negotiate the complex set of issues related to HIV.

• Financial benefits counselors help individuals understand and link into the complex private and public benefits systems, including the AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP), General Assistance, Food Stamps, Medi-Cal, Medicare, Social Security, and private disability plans.

• The Foundation's housing subsidy program provides rental assistance to over 350 individuals. Through the work of our client advocates and the clients themselves, over 95% of these individuals remain stably housed. Participants in the program must be referred from the San Francisco Department of Public Health's Housing Waitlist and/or Centers of Excellence.

• Black Brothers Esteem (BBE) promotes the sexual health and well-being of African American gay and same-gender loving men through a weekly drop-in group, workshops, leadership-building retreats, and other community-building activities. BBE addresses not only issues of HIV, but also the challenges of poverty, substance use, homophobia, and racism.

• The HIV Prevention Project, the AIDS Foundation's needle exchange program, provides over 2.3 million syringes annually, helping thousands of exchangers and their partners avoid HIV infection and Hepatitis C. Staff and volunteers, nurse practitioners, and drug treatment counselors provide free, anonymous exchange and other critical services at locations throughout San Francisco.

• The Speed Project works with gay and bisexual men who use crystal methamphetamine to assist them in understanding the connections between their substance use and their sexual health and well-being. This is done through education, peer support, and alternative social activities.

• El Grupo is one of the longest running bilingual support groups for Latinos living with HIV in the nation. Open to all HIV-positive Latino/as and their families, it provides a safe forum to share information on managing HIV and reducing isolation and stigma.

Education and Information

The San Francisco AIDS Foundation continues to be a leader in educating at-risk communities about HIV/AIDS prevention and in connecting thousands of people to the critical information they need to make informed decisions about HIV-related risk and health.

• The California HIV/AIDS Hotline is a toll-free anonymous and confidential hotline run by the San Francisco AIDS Foundation. The hotline answers 70,000 calls a year from across the state and provides referrals, comprehensive information about HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases, and emotional support to those affected by HIV/AIDS. Calls are answered in English and Spanish, Monday-Friday.

• The AIDS Foundation's treatment publication, BETA (Bulletin of Experimental Treatments for AIDS), provides in-depth treatment information and news on the latest advances in HIV care. Available in hardcopy and online, BETA is published twice a year in both English and Spanish and is distributed to 25,000 readers.

• Community Outreach activities provide education about various aspects of HIV/AIDS to the public. Our Speakers Bureau Program provides compelling and informed speakers to schools, employers, and other institutions.

• In addition to www.sfaf.org, the San Francisco AIDS Foundation maintains three other websites that provide a comprehensive range of information about HIV/AIDS issues and the activities of the AIDS Foundation. These include www.aidshotline.org, www.pgaf.org, and www.aidslifecycle.org.

Advocacy and Public Policy Efforts

The San Francisco AIDS Foundation advocates at the federal, state and local levels to ensure that hundreds of thousands of people affected by HIV and AIDS have access to care, treatment, housing, and prevention support and that they benefit from related research efforts.

• The AIDS Foundation's Public Policy Department plays a leading role in securing federal, state, and local government funding for crucial HIV/AIDS-related programs. Public policy staff members also work to ensure passage of sound HIV/AIDS policies and legislation.

• HIV Policy Watch, a bulletin on key HIV/AIDS policy issues, is published monthly by the Public Policy Department.

• The AIDS Foundation's HIV Advocacy Network (HAN) organizes and mobilizes AIDS advocates, service providers, and people living with HIV/AIDS to advocate for effective AIDS policies. HAN distributes periodic Action Alerts, encouraging members to advocate on key issues.

Global AIDS Programs

The Pangaea Global AIDS Foundation is an affiliate of the San Francisco AIDS Foundation. Pangaea's mission is to broaden access to HIV/AIDS antiretroviral treatment and care around the world, with special emphasis on work in resource-limited settings. Pangaea provides assistance to in-country and international partners in the development of healthcare infrastructure for HIV/AIDS treatment efforts.

The Foundation also prides itself on its diverse work environment. A large number of our staff and volunteers are HIV positive. Gay men, lesbians, bisexuals, transgender people, heterosexuals, women, and people from the African-American, Latino, Asian/Pacific Islander, Native American, White, and other communities of color are present in every aspect of the Foundation’s work. Because of its ongoing commitment to sustain and nurture a diverse working environment, the Foundation is able to be a forceful, well informed presence in the many communities affected by HIV disease.
