JOB SUMMARY:
The individual in this position will perform a variety of material science and engineering duties.  Overall responsibilities include planning, coordinating and conducting various R&D, product development and sustaining activities. Primary responsibilities include: develop and enhance in-house materials testing and analytical expertise; develop material/processes/procedures to continuously improve the quality of orthodontic products; provide intellectual property/competitive products analysis.   Secondary responsibilities include project management and leadership, maintaining project schedules, developing creative solutions to process design problems, ensuring the proper engineering deliverables are generated completely, generation of 3D CAD models, 2D CAD drawings, test procedures & validation reports, etc.
This individual will work closely with other engineers, designers, manufacturing, marketing, sales and regulatory staff to ensure specifications are met with technically strong, high quality, cost effective process designs following Ortho’s defined processes and procedures.  
 
This individual will measure standard metrics, diagram the flow, including inputs and outputs of a business process, identifying opportunities for improvement, developing a plan for implementing improvements and monitoring the new process to ensure it works as intended. During the course of a normal day, this position may be required to prepare reports, statistics analysis, and work with front-line staff to identify improvement opportunities and coaching employees on how to work more efficiently.
 
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES & ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Full use of materials and mechanical engineering principles, concepts, theories and techniques to solve problems related to manufacturing and design.   Contribute to development of processes at all stages, from concept creation to production tooling.
R&D and Product Development:   Conduct research and development projects related to new and/or improved orthodontic products:  metal and ceramic brackets, stainless steel archwires, Nitinol products, adhesives, elastics and elastomeric products. Develop in-house and/or outside analytical capabilities for R&D, product development, trouble-shooting and root-cause analysis. Develop and implement materials/processes specifically targeted to improve the quality of orthodontic products.   Provide competitive products and intellectual property (IP) analyses input to the new products development process (as-assigned).
Manufacturing Engineering:   Provides manufacturing and process improvement to production departments such as welding, brazing, polishing, MIM, environment engineering. Conduct process-improvement projects related to the various manufacturing processes: metal injection molding, ceramic injection molding, band-forming, feedstock formulation, debinding, sintering, welding, brazing, heat-treatment, polishing, corrosion-prevention and surface-treatment.
Limited use of project management principles, concepts, theories and techniques to lead project team while maintaining accountability for schedule and budget.
 
Develops resolutions to an assortment of problems with moderately complex scope following engineering fundamentals, some advanced engineering principles, company standard practices and procedures and related specifications.
Works under normal supervision from project leader or functional manager and tasks are generally outlined on an as needed basis prior to starting an activity.  Work is typically reviewed for accuracy and overall content.
Contributes to the organization and fulfillment of project objectives.  Failure to accomplish tasks may require allocation of additional resources to correct and/or achieve the project goals.
Ability to manage projects with up to 10 team members, but typically leads teams of 4 to 8.  Plans, implements, and executes engineering project leadership through all project phases Provides status and progress reports to customer, project team, and management. Evaluates and approves design changes, specification, and drawing changes.
Leads reviews of process design for compliance with engineering principles, company standards, customer contract requirements, and related specifications with guidance from engineering management.
Ensures accurate controlled documents are generated.  Produces design models, drawing details, assembly drawings, and associated engineering documentation with 3-D parametric modeling software, MS Word, EXCEL and MS Power Point.
Requires regular, reliable attendance.
Participates in special projects and performs other duties as required.

·         Individual must perform the following duties in a professional way, supporting Ortho Organizers’ Quality Policy. Must understand, follow and comply with regulatory requirements as applicable to various processes.  An understanding of FDA Quality System Regulations (21 CFR 820) and ISO Standards (ISO 13485) is required.
 
EXPERIENCE:
Bachelors degree in Mechanical or Biomedical Engineering; or four to ten years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
 
SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Ability to work in team environment as contributor and leader
3+ years of experience working with materials and the processing technology to produce those materials. Job duties include analyzing materials and data, conducting tests, troubleshooting, monitoring performance, insuring quality control and creating documentation.
3+ years of experience developing new methods of testing, training technicians and lab workers, maintaining inventories and ordering supplies. Engineers must also stay up-to-date on industry standards, government regulations and new developments in their field
3+ years of experience designing with Pro-E (Wildfire 2.0 or higher) or equivalent Solidworks.
3+ years of project management experience with multi-discipline teams.
2+ years of injection mold component and mold design.
Possess a strong knowledge of mechanical manufacturing techniques including machining, sheet metal, and injection molding.
Ability to create and maintain scheduled plans while maintaining quality of engineering deliverables with guidance for engineering management.
Excellent decision making/problem solving skills.
Proficient in MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and MS Power Point.
Experience with orthodontic, dental, or medical products a plus.
Experience with phased new product development processes from concept through full production release a plus.

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents.  Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints.  Ability to write speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques or style.  Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
 
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to comprehend and apply principles of advanced calculus, modern algebra, and advanced statistical theory. Ability to work with concepts such as limits, rings, quadratic and differential equations, and proofs of theorems.
 
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems.  Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, musical notes, etc.,) in its most difficult phases.  Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.
 
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Ability to work from both verbal and written instruction.  Be hands-on computer literate.
