Job Description

The position serves in a senior managerial capacity to coordinate the activities of administrators, faculty, and staff in the preparation of major grant proposals for collaborative, cross-disciplinary projects involving basic and translational biomedical research, research infrastructure and research training. The appointee will consult with groups of principal investigators to conceptualize and develop new research, research infrastructure and training initiatives.

The incumbent will assume the lead responsibility in grant writing and preparation, as well as coordinating the contributions of other participating faculty and staff.


The position will report to the Executive Director of the Office of Grant Development and collaborate with Cancer Center leadership, faculty, and staff across UC Davis. Candidates should have extensive experience preparing scientific grant proposals, particularly to the National Cancer Institute and other NIH Institutes as appropriate. Strong scientific writing and editing skills are required, as well as the ability to effectively work in a team environment and manage complex projects.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in Biology, Molecular Oncology, or related fields and/or equivalent education/training
  • Extensive years of experience preparing scientific grant proposals for cancer-focused federal (with an emphasis on the National Cancer Institute), state, and private organizations.
  • Advanced level scientific writing, editing, and proofreading experience.
  • Experience with federal grant application procedures, formats, guidelines, and requirements.
  • Experience working with large amounts of complex technical information.
  • Experience producing accurate and persuasive text and figures for presentations.
  • Experience conceptualizing and developing new research, research infrastructure, and training initiatives.
  • Experience working with relevant computer/software system and applications, including MS Windows/Mac OS, MS Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), web browser applications and e-mail applications.
  • Experience working with confidential materials and information.
  • Extensive investigative and organizational skills.
  • Experience working effectively work in a team situation and managing complex projects.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Biology, Molecular Oncology, or related field.

This position will play a key role in enhancing the basic, translational, clinical and population research activities of the UCDCCC, and in enhancing the center's participation in major research initiatives identified by granting agencies as national priorities.
