Job Summary

The Clinical Research Coordinator will provide clinical research coordination for a variety of clinical outcomes studies, including the UCSF Core Center for Patient-centric Mechanistic Phenotyping in Chronic Low Back Pain (REACH) program.

Job Overview

The Clinical Research Coordinator works independently, with general direction from the PI, and plays a critical role in managing all aspects of patient and policy studies as directed by PI. This requires close interaction with patient care staff, research team members and study personnel at other sites.

Study duties include the execution, management, and coordination of clinical research protocols; including coordination of the data/specimen collection and operations of several concurrent clinical research studies under the guidelines of research protocols, UCSF, and regulating agency policies.

This includes but is not limited to scheduling study visits, subject recruitment, consenting, data collection, performance of study measures as per standardized study procedures, data collection; supporting the study investigators and research team, and coordinating project work flows with research team members.

Additionally, the incumbent will communicate with research subjects by phone, in person, and via email; serve as the point-of-contact for study participants during study activities; and work under the direction of the REACH Coordinating Center (at UCSF) to recruit and screen potential study participants identified via UCSF CTSI Recruitment Services direct mailings and MyChart advertisements.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is responsible for the department's academic, teaching, patient care professional services and research activities under the UCSF School of Medicine (SOM). The department has over 250 academic and staff personnel at multiple sites (University of California - UC, Mt. Zion, Mission Bay - MB, San Francisco General Hospital - SFGH, and San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center - SFVAMC). The Orthotic and Prosthetic Department provides joint patents care with numerous services across the UCSF health care system.

Required Qualifications

  • HS graduation and sufficient experience and demonstrated skills to successfully perform the assigned duties and responsibilities; and/or equivalent experience/training
  • Attention-to-detail; strong record-keeping and organizational skills; strong interpersonal skills; excellent, effective verbal and written communication skills to coordinate with subjects, team members, other departments and outside institutions; and the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment while working with a diverse subject population
  • Ability to work well independently, complete projects in a timely manner, and prioritize multiple projects to ensure the completion of essential tasks by deadlines
  • Demonstrated record of excellent attendance and reliability

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two years experience in a clinical research environment plus sufficient experience and demonstrated skills to successfully perform the assigned duties and responsibilities
  • BA/BS degree plus sufficient experience and demonstrated skills to successfully perform the assigned duties and responsibilities
  • Fluency in the usage of Committee of Human Research (CHR) online iMEDris system for submission, renewal, and modification of protocols through this system
  • Ability to understand subject population to create rapport and a relationship, while also giving insight to what is realistic and appropriate for patient participation
  • Experience with electronic medical records
  • Knowledge of UCSF and departmental policies for dealing with reimbursement, guidelines for research, confidentiality and HIPPA regulations, following the UCSF mission statement and purpose for research, and a clear understanding of policies and procedures on patient safety and confidentiality (electronic and hard copy medical records, patient charts, communication, etc.)
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, research policies and guidelines, guidelines for packing/shipping infectious substances, database building/analysis, and data management within some of the following: Access, Stata, SASS/SPSS, and Teleform programming platforms
  • Working familiarity with the following computer programs: REDCap (intermediate), MS Office/Excel & Word (advanced)
  • Experience applying the following regulations and guidelines:
    • Good Clinical Practice Guidelines
    • Health Information and Accountability Act (HIPAA)
    • The Protection of Human Research Subjects
    • CHR regulations for recruitment and consent of research subjects
    • Effective Cash Handling Procedures
    • Environmental Health and Safety Training
    • Fire Safety Training
