Job Description
ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION:
Seafood and Fisheries Emerging Technologies (SAFET) was launched as a conference in 2014 to explore the potential of emerging, and potentially disruptive, technologies to improve the conservation and management of our world's fisheries and the traceability of the seafood supply chain. From drones to cameras and satellites to artificial intelligence, SAFET explores and creates dialogues around cutting-edge technologies such as these (and many more) while better connecting technology developers with those individuals and organizations that stand to benefit most from them. Since the first event in Honiara, Solomon Islands, biennial SAFET conferences have taken place in New Zealand, Thailand, Indonesia, and virtually in 2020/21. The
most recent conference took place in October 2023 in Bali, Indonesia and drew over 200 participants from 35 countries.

Building on significant growth in the community it serves, SAFET is at a key juncture in its evolution. To better achieve its vision of a thriving industry of technology providers providing solutions to the seafood industry’s most pressing challenges, SAFET is building out a communications platform that increases information flow between all stakeholders in the fisheries technology space in ways that complement a biennial conference schedule. This platform will support both the overall community as well as communities of practice that are focused on specific fishery challenges and will include
curated resource libraries, tools to better connect technology providers with technology implementers, regular newsletters, webinars, regional events and
other activities that support SAFET’s vision.

To support this evolution, since 2022 SAFET has been an independent operating project of the nonprofit umbrella organization, Multiplier, a nationally recognized nonprofit with a growing portfolio of innovative initiatives that conserve and protect a sustainable and resilient world.

POSITION SUMMARY:
Reporting to Multiplier and supported by an existing advisory board, the SAFET Executive Director will be a highly motivated self-starter who will refine and execute a set of strategies and activities aimed at achieving SAFET’s vision. The SAFET Executive Director will be responsible for all aspects of the SAFET platform including, but not limited to, organizing the biennial SAFET conference as well as online, hybrid and in-person events, coordinating periodic meetings with SAFET partners, budgeting, fundraising and financial planning, website development, and communications and outreach activities. The role will provide an environment for personal and professional growth in concert with the expected growth of the platform.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE:
You are an excellent and compelling communicator and spokesperson, fluent in English and comfortable driving a diverse cross-sector platform. You are an inspiring ambassador with drive and initiative, likely with demonstrated experience leading in a start-up or entrepreneurial environment, and comfortable driving organizational growth with minimal oversight. With an eye toward diversity, equity and inclusion, you have exposure to various cultures, geographies, nationalities, ethnicities and points of view, appreciating the basis of each person’s worldview. You demonstrate respect for involvement with a diversity of people, communities and cultures, with awareness and sensitivity to their economic realities.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Ensure the successful operation of the SAFET platform and the growth of the SAFET community:
  • Design, organize and lead biennial SAFET conferences, regional events, webinars and other events, including logistics, agenda development, partner identification and outreach and drafting meeting reports.

  • Lead the development of ‘communities of practice’ that bring together diverse global stakeholders to tackle specific fishery challenges.
  • Manage the maintenance and development of the SAFET website, including online tools that serve to better connect technology providers with technology implementers.

  • Develop new website content regularly to ensure a dynamic web presence.
  • Represent SAFET to project stakeholders, funders and the public at speaking engagements, meetings and events, including by delivering speeches or presentations in public settings.
  • Receive and transmit official SAFET communications, including invitations for speakers, presenters, or vendors.
Development and Leadership
  • Engage the SAFET advisory board in a virtual or in-person meeting setting on a regular basis, keeping all board members apprised of developments and ongoing project activities.
  • Provide regular written updates to advisory board members as requested by the chair of the board.
  • Perform such other functions as are necessary to ensure the efficient and effective operation of the SAFET platform.
Administrative Management
  • Serve as the project liaison to Multiplier staff, keeping appropriate points of contact informed of significant changes in SAFET programming, staffing and budget conditions.
