Job Summary

EH&S employs the UCSF Fresno Occupational Safety Officer to serves as the technical expert to support developing, implementing and monitoring safety programs at the UCSF School of Medicine Fresno campus that are consistent with all UCSF campuses. The UCSF Fresno Occupational Safety Officer serves as safety subject matter expert with responsibilities in leading a variety of safety disciplines at the UCSF Fresno campus. The incumbent reports to UCSF EH&S and liaises with UCSF Emergency Management, local affiliate hospital administration, and various other constituencies unique to the UCSF Fresno campus and will collaborate with Facilities Services on safety, fire prevention, and environmental requirements. The incumbent will build relationships between main campus departments and their personnel, and affiliate liaisons in similar capacities.

In order to create a high visibility, integrated safety culture with the UCSF Fresno campus, job duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Development of programs and initiatives to ensure integration of safety into the routine and non-routine activities of UCSF Fresno
  • Create and maintain applicable written safety programs
  • Develop and deliver relevant safety training
  • Periodic audits/inspections
  • Perform ergonomic evaluations
  • Perform N95 respirator fit testing & training on UCSF's Respiratory Protection Program
  • Serve as local liaison for UCSF's Enterprise Emergency Management
Strong communication skills and the ability to work across multiple departments or units are critical to the success of this position. The UCSF Fresno Occupational Safety Officer will assess safety program needs and challenges, identify compliance gaps, provide expert analysis and guidance to EH&S leadership in developing policies and guidelines applicable to UCSF Fresno operations.

Department Description

The UCSF Office of Environment, Health and Safety (EH&S) is responsible for ensuring a safe and healthy environment at UCSF for all faculty, staff, students, patients and visitors. EH&S is responsible for supporting regulatory compliance for all campus workplace safety and environmental compliance issues including: biosafety, chemical safety, environmental protection, ergonomics, facilities safety, fire and life safety, industrial hygiene, radiation safety, laser safety, DEA controlled substance compliance, hazardous materials, spill response, food facility compliance and safety, safety training, personal protective equipment (PPE), asbestos program, hazardous waste management, etc. The EH&S program also provides substantial safety and environmental program support to the UCSF Health System and several UCSF affiliates.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • Minimum 5 years of related experience
  • Advanced or expert knowledge / understanding of broad range of EH&S fields and familiarity with all EH&S fields
  • Advanced or expert knowledge and skill in applying and interpreting applicable local, state, and federal regulations and related standards, guidelines and, as appropriate, recommend organization policy
  • Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communications skills, including advanced political acumen and skill to effectively communicate with diverse constituencies in a highly political environment
  • Advanced skill to effectively represent the organization to state and federal authorities, and community groups
  • Advanced analytical and organizational skills to organize, prioritize and manage the successful completion of projects within budget and time constraints

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced skill in mentoring or overseeing the work of other EH&S technical and professional staff
  • Advanced skill to appropriately use technology and relevant scientific equipment as required
  • Professional certification preferred
  • Certified Safety Professional
