Job Description

Shared Services: Risk Management (Full-Time, Day Shift) -

Job Summary: The Occupational Safety Specialist develops, maintains, and implements industrial safety plans to protect employees from workplace hazards. Provides education and training to ensure safe work practice. Conducts workplace audits to identify hazards and deficiencies; provides written reports of results and recommendations to correct unsafe conditions. Collaborate, elicit support, and network with multidisciplinary personnel as well as experts/resources outside. Uses an analytical framework to create, develop, and maintain the Occupational Safety program. Investigates incidents of occupational illness and injury and provides corrective action. Participates in the EH&S Emergency Response. Maintains up to date understanding of all applicable occupational safety code and regulation and how this affects LLUH. Performs other duties as needed.

Education and Experience: Bachelor's Degree in chemistry, biology or environmental science required, Masters preferred. Three years prior experience in safety management, including experience with California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal-OSHA) regulations.

Knowledge and Skills: Able to write legibly; speak in English with professional quality; use computer, printer, and Windows-based software programs necessary to the position. Able to work with hand tools, work in various personal protective equipment, including chemical protective clothing and respiratory protection. Able to communicate in English with excellent oral, written, and listening communication skills. Able to give presentations; work as a team player to achieve LLUH and departmental goals; relate positively, effectively, and professionally with others; be assertive and consistent in following and/or enforcing policies; lead others to cooperate and follow a specific course of action; work calmly and respond courteously when under pressure; accept direction; maintain confidentiality of information. Able to demonstrate sound and mature judgment and analytical skills; compose and edit written documents and communications; read and write efficiently; think critically; perform basic math functions; initiate and manage multiple assignments effectively; organize and prioritize workload; problem solve; recall information and pay close attention to detail; work independently with minimal supervision and meet expected deadlines. Able to recognize and report safety hazards. Able to smell chemicals or odors in environment, especially when detecting a breakthrough in a respirator. Visual acuity to correctly read equipment dials or indicators, read computer screens, correctly monitor gauges and instruments. Able to identify and distinguish various sounds associated with workplace and potential hazards. Discern temperature variances through touch.

Licensures and Certifications: Valid Driver`s License required at time of hire. Eligible for respirator (half-face and SCBA), HAZWOPER and First Receiver Operations and Decontamination for Healthcare certifications. Associate Safety Professional (ASP) certification required within one year of hire. Certified Safety Professional preferred.
