Berkeley Lab is on the lookout for a dynamic Lead Telecom Network and Data Communications Technician to spearhead our cutting-edge telecommunications infrastructure. This role will orchestrate the seamless flow of network, telephone, and other telecom operations throughout the Lab. This position is the mastermind behind the installation, operation, and maintenance of our campus's intricate cabling system, linking buildings with lightning-fast connectivity. Your domain will encompass not just the physical hardware, but the entire ecosystem of telecommunication spaces, from power distribution to equipment racks, ensuring our network stays robust and resilient. What You Will Do:

Team Leadership

  • Efficiently manage team task assignments to ensure timely completion of orders in line with deadlines and customer agreements.
  • Collaborate with other professionals to plan and direct work, meeting project deadlines and technical specifications.
  • Keep customers informed about project progress and completion. Provide training and mentorship to technician staff on best practices, safety, and complex task execution.
  • Conduct inspections to verify task completion standards. Represent the Computing Facilities Group at project meetings and walkthroughs.

Supporting Telecom and Data Networking Projects

  • Perform job and project estimates, plan cable routes, design and construct closet frames independently.
  • Assist in Telecom Room infrastructure changes design and implementation.
  • Order materials and equipment to ensure project completion on schedule.
  • Plan, construct, test, and document large-scale outside plant trunk cables.
  • Install and terminate fiber and copper outside plant communications cable between buildings.
  • Install and terminate fiber and copper communications cable inside buildings from backbone to individual station drops.
  • Plan, construct, test, and document fiber circuits.
  • Diagnose and repair indoor and outdoor plant cable and splices.

Data Center Maintenance and Operation

  • Coordinate repair of HVAC, generator, and alarm systems for equipment maintained by others.
  • Ensure periodic tests on environmental systems by M&O and outside vendors.
  • Renew yearly contracts with outside vendors for battery and UPS system maintenance.
  • Install, relocate, and configure wireless and SNMP controlled environmental alarm monitoring devices.
  • Document infrastructure modifications in Computing Facilities Group spaces.

Service Orders

  • Assign or assist with Move/Add/Change requests for telephone and network devices on building communications wiring.
  • Lead installation groups to ensure efficiency.
  • Plan, construct, test, and document special circuits for monitoring systems or electronic equipment.
  • Manage inventory and order materials to meet project deadlines and ensure spare parts availability.
  • Troubleshoot telephone device and circuit issues.
  • Perform monthly work order closeout for accurate charging and cost tracking.

What is Required:

  • 8-10 years of relevant technical experience or education.
  • Proficient in following established guidelines and procedures.
  • Skilled in professional and courteous interaction with staff at all levels.
  • Proven track record of delivering excellent customer service.
  • Demonstrated experience in the following areas:
    • Telecommunications plant and building wiring methods and practices
    • Inside building cable route planning
    • Categories 5 and 6 and TIA568B/C wiring installation standards and practices
    • Fiber optic cable installation and termination
    • Telephone and network circuit installation and testing using specialized test equipment
    • Firestop procedures and methods
    • Telephone closet backboard layout design and construction
    • BIX, M66 and AT&T punch down blocks; diagnosis, troubleshoot and repair of problems related to telephone sets and data devices
    • PBX telephone sets and data devices
    • Twisted pair Ethernet circuits
  • Experienced in handling moderately complex orders and troubleshooting under general supervision.
  • Proficient in diagnosing and testing problems with underground wiring or splices independently.
  • Skilled in network troubleshooting, including DHCP, Voice VLAN, VoIP, and WiFi.
  • Self-motivated leader with professionalism.
  • Proficient in extending lines from the main demarcation point.
  • Knowledgeable in electrical, fire, and HVAC systems.
  • Successful small-scale project leadership.
  • Availability for occasional overtime, including evenings, early mornings, weekends, or holidays.

Desired Qualifications:

  • General knowledge and understanding of T1 communications lines.
  • Experience managing daily task assignments for small teams.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time career appointment, non-exempt (hourly paid).
  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
  • Salary will be determined based on range by collective bargaining agreement.
  • The hourly range for this position is $40.50 - $58.74. The hourly rate for this position is based on the final candidate's qualifications and relevant experience (if applicable, and union contract agreement).
