Job Summary

**This is a one year contract position with an appointment end date of 8/31/25. **


Under the supervision of UCSF and other UC Legal attorneys, the Associate Counsel will conduct legal research, draft documents, attend client meetings, hearings, and negotiations, as appropriate and possible, and participate in other activities intended to expose the Associate Counsel to the practice of law and substance of the Office of Legal.

UC Legal-San Francisco

The UC Legal-San Francisco team assists the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and UCSF Health community to accomplish its strategic goals across the entire UCSF enterprise in a manner consistent with both law and University policy. As an integral part of the campus community, the UC Legal-San Francisco office supports and facilitates the campus' educational, patient care, research, and community service activities by providing legal services in a proactive and responsive manner.

Required Qualifications

  • Must possess a J.D. from an accredited law school, advanced degree in a directly related area within the last 3 years, and/or equivalent experience/training
  • Must be a member in good standing of the California Bar (Out-of-state hire would be afforded time to pass the Bar within a reasonable period.)
  • Interest in promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion, and California public policy
  • Ability to gain skills in collaboration and creative thinking to effectively partner with other attorneys and a diverse spectrum of clients
  • Ability to work collegially and cooperatively with others in a team-oriented, fast-paced work environment
  • Demonstrated interpersonal communication skills, including strong ability to actively listen to understand and differentiate critical aspects of issue, prior to offering counsel, and aptitude for communicating persuasively verbally and in writing
  • Demonstrated written communication skills and ability to create and deliver effective materials and / or presentations appropriate to a particular audience
  • Keen analytical skills
  • Ability to acquire skills to draft accurate and complete legal documents, such as pleadings, legal responses, affidavits, position statements and briefs
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion and tact when handling sensitive or potentially sensitive issues
  • Demonstrated commitment to fairness in all interactions (both within and outside the team), and to the highest ethical standards

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a legal support or intern role
  • Demonstrated interest in pursuing a career with public or non-profit entities, ideally in the field of healthcare and/or higher education
  • Basic understanding of legal issues in a University counsel setting
  • Basic understanding of legal issues in a university counsel or in-house hospital or health system setting

License/Certification

  • Must be a member in good standing of the California Bar (Out-of-state hire would be afforded time to pass the Bar within a reasonable period)
