Job Description

Under primary supervision of the Director of Student Engagement and Success, College of Letters and Science Undergraduate Education and Advising, serve as a key member of the LSUEA Office to provide leadership and management to broad-based, data-driven, proactive, and student-centered retention programs in support of the L&S Dean's DEI and Strategic Plan goals. Retention programs, which offer academic, personal, social, and transitional support, include assisting students of diverse backgrounds in building a strong sense of community, advising students holistically in individual and group settings, mentoring underserved students, and linking students to various campus resources and other administrative offices to enhance the student experience and promote student success. The AD is responsible for developing, coordinating, and facilitating educational intervention and enhancement activities, including group and/or cohort academic advising, First-Year Seminar/Experience/Aggie Connections, transition and/or bridge programs, living-learning communities, mentorship, and college-level honors and awards to improve persistence rates and time-to-degree, with attention to educational disparities and opportunity gaps across the undergraduate student population.

Acts as a College liaison to the Internship and Career Center and L&S College Relations and Development, with the goal of maintaining and establishing new relationships with alumni and employers to assist students with internship and career exploration, and post-graduation success. In partnership with ICC, other Student Engagement and Success staff, and major departmental faculty and staff, develop and deliver career readiness curriculum through credit-bearing courses and seminars, cohort advising/programming, academic advising, and mentorship.

The Assistant Director will develop and manage the liaison/partnerships with campus-wide academic department, academic retention initiatives (ARIs), community resource and retention centers, learning-living communities, and other student-oriented units, including those housed in Undergraduate Education and Student Affairs. The AD will liaise with and support L&S departmental academic support, retention, and success initiatives.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Work flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays to meet operational and business needs.
  • Occasional travel to visit various work- sites including off-campus locations.
  • All staff members in the College of Letters and Science Dean's Office are required to work at commencement ceremonies held by the College.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree and/or equivalent combination of education, training and experience in a related field or discipline.
  • Experience developing and performing undergraduate student retention and recruitment/yield efforts at a highly selective research university, requiring knowledge of current and competitive student retention and recruitment principles, practices, policies, and trends.
  • Experience advising students on career development needs/issues, such as career interest, career searches, internships, as well as full-time and career-related opportunities.
  • Project management experience in applying strategic visions to lead student retention and recruitment initiatives in higher education.
  • Experience analyzing data from a wide variety of sources and presenting statistical information in an appropriate, understandable format, and data to inform the creation of strategic goals.
  • Experience using writing, editing, and proofreading skills to write in a variety of styles for digital and print for such materials as brochures, programs, magazines, news releases, web, and social media.
  • Experience using interpersonal, communication, and effective listening skills to interact positively and cooperatively with students, parents, faculty, administrators, staff, and the general public in a higher education setting, including group and large-scale presentations.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Education/Experience:

  • Master's degree and/or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Experience working in student programs, and business and personnel administration within an academic or similar environment, preferably in student admission and retention.
  • Skills supervising students in recruiting, advising, outreach, and career development.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

  • Knowledge of campus services and community resources available for underrepresented students with familiarity with campus issues, policies, and practices.
