Job Description:

SEIU’s Research Department provides critical support to a wide range of SEIU campaigns and initiatives. The Research Department is integrated into all facets of campaigns, including industry and company analysis as part of identifying new markets for organizing, strategic research and development for ongoing campaigns and public policy analysis.

The Research Coordinator is a management position and will be hired by SEIU’s Research Department/Property Service Division.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist in the development and implementation of major strategic organizing, bargaining, issue initiatives and campaigns with the divisions and coordinate research, writing and strategic support for such projects in concert with other international departments and local union leaders and staff.
  • Provides advance research services requiring significant expertise in industries, companies, public jurisdictions and issue areas; sophisticated strategic analysis and targeting ability, broad and well developed technical skills and substantial experience in working with other international staff and local unions.
  • Initiates and oversees major internal and external projects in support of organizing and contract campaigns, including production of departmental or other materials and publications.
  • Recruits, trains, evaluates, supervises and supports the work of research staff with similar division/geographic assignments at the international and at local unions.
  • Provides ongoing support to Division Organizers/Coordinators
  • Assists in the creation of Local union research networks that support organizing/political work in the Local unions.
  • Assists in the development, planning and coordination of department workflow and activities.
  • Works with employers and industry officials on policy issues



EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Master’s degree or higher in economics, business or related field or equivalent formal training and experience in advanced research support and research project management for organizing and collective bargaining or labor-related advocacy work.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

  • Thorough knowledge of strategic and qualitative analysis, financial and data analysis.
  • Knowledge of economic policies and statistical analysis.
  • Knowledge of non-NLRB organizing campaign models and how research/strategic campaigns play a role
  • Ability to perform strategic and statistical analysis, direct production of quality research reports and materials.
  • Ability to design, coordinate and direct research projects
  • Ability to design coordinate and direct strategic campaigns.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and see projects through to completion.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; proven presentation skills.
  • Technical writing and editing skills.
  • Ability to manage staff, including staff in remote locations.
  • Ability to recruit, hire and train researchers.
