POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Provides administrative supervision and technical support for the Microbiology Section. Manages the use of necessary resources and is accountable for the day to day operation, including staffing and scheduling. Must share responsibility with other section supervisors for direct supervision of Specimen Processing personnel. Assesses routine laboratory operations and initiates appropriate corrective action in order to maintain and improve laboratory services and patient care. Performs an appropriate level of bench work based on immediate patient needs and available resources. Promotes communication and teamwork between hospital and the laboratory departments, as well as, within the laboratory sections.


REQUIREMENTS:

Must have a four year degree from an accredited college or university in science, medical technology or a related field; completed a one year training program from an accredited School of Medical Technology. Requires a valid current license issued from the State Department of Health as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist. Minimum of 5 years current and continuous experience as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist in an acute care hospital. One or more years of experience as a section supervisor or lead technologist. Computer experience or course work in computer and data processing is required. Certification by examinations as a MT(ASCP) or MTE(ASCP) is preferred. Must demonstrate working knowledge of the principles of basic clinical laboratory science. Must be able to sucessfully lead Microbiology department through CAP certification. Familiarity with the function and operation of Microbiology instrument systems. Experience in instrument trouble-shooting is required.
