OVERVIEW:
The Cook is responsible for preparing meals as well as the overall cleanliness of the kitchen areas. They are also responsible for overseeing kitchen volunteers as assigned and approved. At times, volunteers will be available. You must understand that they are volunteers and not employees (they should not be assigned major duties).

DUTIES:
* Ensure Kitchen is cleaned and sanitized at the end of each workday (counters, stove, dishes and any other cooking utensils, floors, etc.)
* Cook meals on weekdays for the Homeless Lunch Program. It is expected that the meals are nutritious, well balanced, fully cooked, and served at safe temperatures for consumption
* Must maintain a current California Food Handler certificate at all times and comply will all standards of food safety. Must also ensure any volunteers or staff assisting in the Kitchen adhere to the same standards
* Prepare and cook meals for the Women's Home League Program each Tuesday, prepare and cook meals for volunteers who assist with P.U.S.H. program. In addition, on the third Wednesday of each month will prepare and cook lunch for Advisory Board meeting held at 12 pm, and prepare and cook for seasonal events
* Plan ahead and prep meals the day before
* Ensure serving/eating area is cleaned at the end of each meal.
* Ensure food is refrigerated in accordance with local and state guidelines and must understand when food is to be discarded
* Empty any and all trash cans and/or waste baskets on a daily basis. All trash cans will have a lid remaining on top at all times; coordinate with janitorial staff to ensure all trash cans/waste baskets to be washed weekly. Follow waste management guidelines to dispose trash/food appropriately.
* Ensure food is stored safely in appropriate containers. Follow "first in/first out" rule and ensure weekly cleaning of refrigerators. Kitchen stove to be cleaned daily but thoroughly each Monday.
* Ensure equipment is operating properly at all times and report any service issues immediately to Corps Officer and/or Administrative Assistant; inform Corps Officer or Administrative Assistant of any supplies to be ordered in a timely manner to avoid running out of items.
* Clean and do laundry for items related to the Kitchen
* Ability to be creative when working with donated food
* All donated food must be carefully screened for freshness. Unders no circumstances should food in question be served. When in doubt, throw it out.
* Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS
* Prior experience as a cook required
* Strong familiarity of kitchen equipment
* Ability to work with limited or no supervision
* Ability to work with other staff members and volunteers is a must
* Ability to remain calm in stressful situations
* Detailed in work and cleaning
* Ability to multi-task and set priorities
* Must have good communication and organizational skills
* Must be a team-player
* Must be goal-oriented and self-motivated
* Required to have a Food Handler's Card and be responsible for following all guidelines
* The ability to interact with volunteers and the public in a positive, professional manner, in conformity with The Salvation Army Mission Statement.
* The ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds and circumstances.
* Good personal hygiene is required.
* Must be in good physical health and provide evidence of being free from TB and other communicable diseases
* Must have the ability to speak and read English. Preferred bilingual English/Spanish
