Job SummaryThis position is responsible for providing leadership and directing all activities involving the engineering design of distributed and renewable energy projects (e.g. solar, resiliency, microgrid, etc.) in a competitive business environment. Projects may be located across the United States, including Hawaii; and are customer and site specific. This role works closely with the Directors of Project Management, Construction, and Operations to ensure effective implementation of the portfolio project plan with accountability for all engineering activities, including both self-perform and sub-contractor oversight.
The position will lead, organize, and develop the engineering workforce to effectively design projects on-time, on-budget, and exceeding performance requirements and customer expectations. This position will ensure implemented engineering designs comply with all environmental, OSHA, federal, state, and local regulatory standards, codes, and requirements, and will deliver reliable, safe performance to meet contractual requirements and customer expectations. Additionally, the position is responsible for developing and maintaining multi-disciplinary relationships with external engineering companies that support the engineering design output.
The role will lead managerial direct reports in support of deploying engineering designs for an annual portfolio of projects exceeding a capital budget of $100 million.
Responsibilities
70%: Lead the engineering department to strategically plan and provide engineering designs and technical support for the delivery of distributed and renewable energy projects
Oversee and direct engineering designs from conception to completion
Review projects in-depth to schedule design deliverables and estimate costs
Oversee engineering activities to monitor compliance with environmental and regulatory standards and Codes
Oversee engineering activities to ensure compliance with contractual conditions of performance
Coordinate and direct engineering resources, internal and subcontracted, for the purpose of meeting project scope, schedule, and budget
Review work progress daily to maintain project schedule
Prepare internal and external reports pertaining to project status
Proactively prevent problems and resolve emergent issues
Analyze, manage, and mitigate risks
Define, measure, and achieve key performance indicators (KPI) and department improvement initiatives
Collaborate strategically with other departments to identify and implement cost and schedule reduction opportunities
Manage project priorities within functional area to maximize profitability and customer satisfaction
30%: Effective leadership, development, and mentoring of staff.
Provide coaching, mentoring and leadership to direct reports, department team members and throughout the engineering department.
Share tools, learnings, and expertise in a manner consistent with corporate leadership expectations and best practices.
Provide training, guidance, and technical support to direct reports and department staff to ensure employee personal and professional growth, and the department's success
Work with direct reports to develop personal and business goals
Provide employee feedback on performance; develop annual performance evaluations
Manage day-to-day performance of employees under functional area
Develop employee technical and business skills utilizing personal development planning tools and position team and individuals for growth opportunities and special assignments
Key Skills and Experience Requirements
Demonstrated, advanced knowledge of engineering design of distributed and renewable energy projects, specifically solar PV technologies and configurations (ground, canopy, and roof mount) and coupled with battery energy storage
Demonstrated experience leading an engineering organization in the design of distributed and renewable energy projects in a competitive business environment
Proficiency with solar PV engineering design software packages
Strong knowledge of current regulations, standards, and Codes applicable to solar PV design and installation
* Bachelor's degree in Engineering
* In addition to required degree, 10 plus years related work experience
* Professional Engineer (PE)
* Masters degree in Engineering or
* Masters degree in Business Administration
