Job Description

The Remote Coder complies with Official Coding Guidelines in ICD-9-CM/ICD-10-CM coding conventions to assign diagnoses and procedure codes for outpatient records (e.g. ancillary, emergency room and/or outpatient surgical cases) in a work from home position. Clinical judgment and high level analytical skills are utilized to code and abstract the legal medical record to support appropriate reimbursement, data collection, physician documentation improvement, clinical effectiveness, outcome studies, medical staff credentialing, administrative planning and research, to meet regulatory accreditation requirements for state and federal reporting, for hospital use and reporting to the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD) and for other external reporting purposes. QUALIFICATIONS:1. Completion of college level coursework in ICD-9-CM/ICD-10-CM and CPT coding, anatomy and physiology, and medical terminology2. Minimum two years' experience in coding and demonstrating knowledge in the principals and practices of ICD 9 CM/ICD-10 and CPT conventions in an acute care setting preferred3. Minimum two years' of ancillary hospital out-patient and emergency room coding preferred4. Technical aptitude for resolving basic PC hardware and software application problems and ability to perform basic troubleshooting 5. Strong communication skills on the phone and in writing6. Proficient with Excel, Word, and Outlook. 7. Demonstrated ability to work productively, accurately, and independently with minimal supervision or assistance from coworkers8. Proven analytical and problem solving skills 9. Ability to interact well with all levels of employees and physicians throughout the organization, participate in intra- and interdepartmental collaboration, and handle multiple tasks concurrently to meet deadlines remotely from the El Camino Hospital facility.10. Dedicated use of ECH laptop solely for employee use for ECH business with no printer capability11. Ability to maintain electrical wiring utilizing surge protectors and electrical outlets must be grounded in good working order.12. Ability to connect to internet high speed cable with a minimum 22 Mbps download and 7 upload13. Provide a dedicated office environment with minimal distractions that assures maximum privacy of computer screens in accordance with HIPAA. License/Certification/Registration Requirements1. AHIMA Certified Coding Associate (CCA) or AHIMA Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) credential required; APC Certified Interventional Radiology Cardiovascular Coder (CIRCC), preferred
