Job Description

Summary:

The Senior Network Engineer is responsible for researching, designing, implementing, and maintaining network related systems. The Senior Network Engineer will proactively evaluate and continuously refine the systems to ensure efficiency and reliability. The Senior Network Engineer will document solution designs and procedures and train support personnel appropriately. The Senior Network Engineer will lead small projects and initiatives and act as the technical lead on major business projects.

The Senior Network Engineer will provide operational support for all network related solutions and handle escalations from tier 1 and 2 support personnel. The Senior Network Engineer can reside in the greater Madison, WI, or Sunnyvale, CA area; relocation is available for the right candidate. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Operations and Support

  • Work with the business to fulfill requests

  • Respond to and remediate incident tickets

  • Identify and remediate system outages

  • Provision new network systems

  • Perform daily system and security monitoring

  • Maintain existing solutions

Engineering and Design

  • Research and recommend new technologies

  • Design and implement new technologies

  • Document system design and standards

  • Document system processes and procedures

  • Develop and train support personnel and users as necessary

  • Plan lifecycle and roadmap of solutions

  • Proactively evaluate and refine existing solutions

  • Automate repeatable processes

Security

  • Patch systems regularly to ensure security and compliance

  • Respond to and remediate security breaches

  • Harden systems to ensure they are secure

  • Manage security certificates

  • Deploy and manage security agents

Communication

  • Document and report weekly activities to the reporting manager

  • Promote a positive mindset and a collaborative environment

  • Effectively communicate via written or spoken language

  • Produce detailed reports with key metrics

Projects

  • Provide technical leadership for large projects

  • Manage small projects and initiatives

Qualifications

a. Required:

  • A B.S. or M.S. degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or related technical discipline from an accredited. college/university or 10+ years of relevant experience and increasing levels of responsibility managing large scale network environment.

  • 7+ years' experience managing core network and WAN technologies including MPLS, IP VPN, DNS, DHCP, and telecoms systems, preferably in a Cisco environment.

  • Cisco routers/switches/firewalls (ie. ASA 5500 Family, 2900/3800 ISR Routers, Catalyst 3750X stacks & 4500/6500 chassis switches, FirePower, ISE).

  • Cisco wireless (Cisco 5500/2500 series wireless controllers and Prime).

  • Voice system administration and design (Cisco Call Manager/Unity/UCCX, Zoom, etc.).

  • Dynamic routing protocols (EIGRP, OSPF, BGP, etc.).

  • Ability to independently resolve routine problems with various software and hardware systems.

  • Exceptional collaboration & communication skills. Strong ability to participate in interdisciplinary team and influence technology direction.

  • Demonstrate high individual effectiveness and organizational skills: flexibility, communication, time-management and interpersonal skills, with high attention to detail, and experience handling multiple projects/tasks simultaneously while meeting deadlines.

  • Ability to work flexible/extended hours, including evenings and/or weekends as required and as part of afterhours issue escalation.

  • Experience designing and implementing processes to improve user and system support.

  • Proven strong customer service orientation and the ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships, to effectively address difficult interpersonal issues and to handle information confidentially.

b. Preferred or Desired:

  • Cisco certification is a plus.

  • System management and monitoring: SolarWinds Orion, sysLogging, etc.

  • Participate in enterprise IT projects. Project leadership abilities and experience is an advantage. Ability to prioritize tasks and users, service orientation. Ability to manage themselves and others to meet project goals.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities; extensive experience applying industry best practices; strong sense of customer service.

  • In-depth knowledge of tiered-storage and cloud platform vendors such as Amazon, Google, and/or Azure is a plus.

  • Previous experience in a SOX and HIPAA controlled environment is preferred.
