Job Summary

Inspects and performs mechanical repairs and maintenance to yard facilities and equipment. Conducts chipping, painting, routine inspections, mechanical and electrical maintenance, welding, burning, grinding, small boat operations, and scuba diving. Works in all areas of the shipyard including barges, piers, tug boats, oil booms, floating dry docks, graving docks, and sliding ways. Supports all ship movements for the shipyard including diving operations for dockings and launches. Performs other related tasks as assigned, some of which may become essential to the position.

Qualification Standards

High school diploma or GED Certificate is required. Basic Scuba certification preferred but not required or must be able to acquire upon the first 45 days of employment as a condition to continue employment. Must be CFR/First Aid certified or able to pass within the first 30 days of employment. Must be able to pass T1 Welding School within the first 90 days of employment. Burning, welding, craftsmanship, and mechanical skills are preferred. Must have a valid Driver's License. Must have the ability to work at heights, in confined spaces, and be able to work any shift. Must be able to understand written and verbal instructions, communicate effectively with others, hear warning signals, and read and comprehend safety instructions, regulations, and warnings.

Essential Job Tasks

  1. Inspect equipment to ensure safe and reliable operations.
  2. Perform equipment services and repairs using pumps, hand tools, pneumatic tools, and other power tools.
  3. Perform underwater inspections and repairs on SCUBA or Surface Supplied Air, such as cutting, burning, grinding, and fabricating metal structures.
  4. Perform repairs to buildings, structures, production equipment, and portable production support equipment in facilities and onboard ships and barges.
  5. Operate aerial equipment including condors, scissor lifts, overhead cranes, forklifts, trucks and boats.
  6. Complete reports and documents, such as work orders, inspection forms, discrepancy sheets, log books, and service forms.
  7. Other tasks may be assigned relevant to the trade.

Materials, Tools Equipment, Work Aids

Dive gear SCUBA bottles, buoyancy control devices, AGA masks, band mask, various valves and gauges. Hand tools, power tools, pneumatic tools, hand and table saws, bench grinders, files, polishers, port-a-powers, hand trucks, lifts, chain falls, welding equipment, burning torches, jib cranes, man lifts, forklifts, scissor lifts, and bench vises. Task specific personal protective equipment required.

Physical/Mental Involvement

Works in all areas of the shipyard and on board ships requiring frequent walking, climbing, balancing, pushing/pulling, reaching, handling, standing, bending, kneeling, stooping/crouching, sitting, swimming, seeing and hearing. Works in varied whole body positions and in confined spaces with limited visibility. Involves tasks that will require using visual, spatial, and depth perception, reasoning, and making judgements. Requires frequent lifting up to 60lbs. unassisted and lifting/carrying up to 100 lbs. assisted. Must maintain general safety awareness by hearing warning signals, reading and comprehending safety instructions, and avoid hazards commonly present in an employee's work area.

Marginal Job Tasks

Perform housekeeping, including sweeping, in all work areas. Attend safety, quality and/or process improvement meetings as required.

Environmental Factors

Exposure to underwater diving conditions including but not limited to extreme cold, zero visibility, confined space diving, and diving without free ascent. Exposed to extreme temperatures, wind, wet and/or humid conditions when working outdoors or onboard ships. Exposure to fumes, odors, dust, gases, toxic chemicals, confined spaces, and low ventilation conditions, all of which may cause discomfort and/or respiratory difficulties. Exposure to constantly moving machines and mechanical parts and high levels of constant noise.
