Description

The Irvine Police Department is seeking Lateral Public Safety Dispatchers to join our team.

Lateral Dispatcher Salary is competitive, and negotiable based on experience. 

Public Safety Dispatchers designated as a Communications Training Officer 
will be paid an additional six percent (6%) of the employee's base rate of pay.
 
Tactical Dispatchers on SWAT earn 1.5% collateral pay. 

To qualify as a Lateral Public Safety Dispatcher, candidates must:

  • Possess a POST Public Safety Dispatcher Certificate
  • Successfully completed a probationary period within a California public safety agency or have one full year of Dispatcher experience at a Public Safety agency within the last four years at time of hire.
  • Typing Ability: Net speed of 40 wpm
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
       
All Dispatchers will be hired as a Public Safety Dispatcher I and promoted to a Public Safety Dispatcher II after successfully passing training and probation.

Expedited Hiring Process
Verified Lateral Dispatcher candidates will be waived through the Criticall and NTN Exams as well as an expedited background investigation upon passing an oral interview.

Work Environment:
  • The position is required to work a "3/13 schedule" (three 13-hour shifts) per week with paid meal breaks. 
  • Public Safety Dispatchers are required to work holidays and weekends, as well as evening, night, and early morning shifts.
  • Rotating through graveyard shifts is required annually.
  • Official uniforms must be worn.
  • Chain of command oriented.

The Public Safety Department is a full-service public safety agency that provides several special program areas including Emergency Management, Crime Prevention, DARE, School Resource Officer, K-9s, Traffic Enforcement, Commercial Vehicle Enforcement, General Investigation, Crime Scene Investigation, Special Investigation (vice & narcotics), and the Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT).

The Process
The selection process will include an examination and conduct a background investigation prior to appointment. This recruitment may establish an eligibility list to fill future positions in similar and/or lower classifications within the organization.
