Brown and Caldwell is looking for a mid-level Professional Engineer or Geologist to join the Remediation Department within our Site Investigation, Remediation and Solid Waste Service Line. The successful candidate will work on a broad spectrum of projects ranging from conducting and managing environmental site assessments, completing remedial technology/alternatives evaluations, developing conceptual remedial designs and work plans, implementing remediation technologies, and technical reporting.This is an exciting opportunity to work in a growth-oriented professional consulting firm with multiple offices throughout the U.S.The candidate will work with national subject matter experts and client service teams in addition to working with and mentoring junior level staff on various remediation projects. Our ideal candidate will have strong verbal/written communication skills and be a highly organized problem solver.The candidate must be capable of working in a diverse team environment and handling multiple tasks with competing priorities. Some field assignments will be required.

Detailed Description:

Brown and Caldwell's Irvine, California office has an exciting opportunity for a mid-level Professional Engineer or Geologist to join the Remediation Department of our Private Sector Enterprise. This is a great opportunity to support an established team of talented environmental scientists and engineers. You will work on projects that involve both clean water and contaminated water issues. You will help our clients investigate and remediate sites, permit new sites, and stay in compliance with operating sites. The successful candidate should have a strong knowledge base in the application of regulations, understanding of local, state and federal compliance requirements, regulatory experience with project delivery and client management, business and proposal development skills, and ability to work collaboratively in teams and mentoring junior staff.

This role will provide a high level of support for ongoing and new projects addressing environmental concerns of private sector projects. In addition, this position will support project development (i.e., scopes of work, proposals and project budgeting), compliance strategy development, representing our clients in negotiations with regulatory agencies, and promoting a high level of technical competence in our work products. The position also provides the opportunity to manage projects of varying size and complexity. Additional job responsibilities are as follows:

  • Manage and execute routine and complex scopes of work for environmental projects including: proposal development, cost estimating, project planning and development, permitting, senior reviews, technical oversight, and reporting
  • Manage multiple complex projects and programs in diverse settings and with changing requirements.
  • Participate in a fast-paced, highly collaborative team atmosphere.
  • Successfully manage and deliver projects on time, on budget, and with high quality.
  • Utilize internal project management tools and resources.
  • Participate in improving company resources and tools to improve production and efficiency
  • Mentor/supervise, delegate, and oversee the work of technical staff and engineers; coordinate with other disciplines
  • Ensure the project team is implementing BC's quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) process
  • Provide technical support on a variety of environmental services projects
  • Communicate findings and problems to senior staff and make recommendations, as appropriate. Work independently and lead multi-discipline teams to meet project objectives
  • Devise and/or implement field programs
  • Apply knowledge of geology and hydrogeology and/or engineering solutions and strategies to address soil, soil vapor, and groundwater contamination on our clients' behalf
  • Work with our national subject matter experts and client service teams to develop strategic approaches to investigate, remediate, optimize remedies, and close environmentally impacted sites
  • Work with regulators and clients partnered with other BC staff and independently, as appropriate
  • Some field assignments will be required. Field work includes (but is not limited to) sampling soil, soil gas, indoor air, surface water, and/or groundwater; overseeing drilling operations, borehole logging, and/or well installations; coordinating/oversight of construction and drilling subcontractors
  • Field assignments will require potential travel at all times of the year and might include overnight stays outside of the Irvine, California area
  • Field assignments require ability to perform physically demanding work.

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Civil, Environmental, or related) with 5+ years of professional experience; MS Degree a plus
  • Candidate should either have a California PE/PG or have a PE/PG from another state and be willing/able to obtain a California PE/PG in the near term
  • Strong technical skills with the ability to articulate ideas and concepts both visually and contextually are essential
  • Strong project management skills required
  • Strong verbal/written communication skills and ability to work well independently and in team environments
  • Candidate must be willing and able to travel for daily and short-term field assignments
  • 40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER certification required
  • Must be willing to work in the field and able to perform physical work (see requirements below)
  • Experience in the consulting field preferred
  • Possess a positive, can-do attitude, be flexible and self-motivated, and have an attention to detail
  • Valid driver's license and good driving record
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining a strong focus on health and safety, quality, and schedule
  • Ability and willingness to complete field assignments that require potential travel at all times of the year with overnight stays outside the Irvine area, potentially for extended periods of time (up to a week)
  • Ability to work for short periods of time in hot and cold weather (occasionally extreme conditions)
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment at sites including hard hats, steel toed boots (or other approved toe protection), Tyvek suits, fire retardant clothing, safety glasses, safety vests, respirators, etc.
  • Ability to stand for several hours observing and documenting field conditions or critical construction operations
  • Ability to walk slowly around sites of varying size that may have areas of uneven, muddy, and/or rocky ground to perform inspections and take photographs
  • Ability to lift objects on job sites less than 30 pounds
  • Ability to remain alert and vigilant while working around construction equipment and be able to walk swiftly for a short distance to clear an area where a potential hazard is identified
