Job Summary
The Quality Systems (QS) Specialist will work in a highly complex clinical laboratory that performs tests and provides services that support solid organ and blood marrow transplant programs as well as:

- performing on-call duties for the deceased donor transplant programs
- entering patient and sample information to the Laboratory Information System
- preparing cell subsets
- isolating DNA
- HLA typing by various methods;
- crossmatch testing by flow cytometry and Pronase methods
- screening and identifying HLA antibodies;
- chimerism testing by STR
- performing KIR genotyping and other HLA-related tests;
- assisting in managing samples (store, retrieve and aliquot samples)
- performing quality control and routine maintenance on various laboratory equipment
- analyzing and reporting laboratory data
- ordering supplies, repairs and other services
- answering phones

The QS Specialist also assumes oversight of the Quality Management / Quality Control of the ITL in accordance with established SOP workflow and mandatory regulatory standards. This includes collection, evaluation and distribution of lab related quality tracking and trending data, i.e., test volumes, turn-around time, test failure rates and report amendment rates.

Lastly, the QS Specialist will:
- prepare and present monthly review and troubleshooting of quality metrics to ITL leadership and other parties as determined by the laboratory manager and / or director
- be responsible for managing the SOPs, proficiency testing, licensing and accreditation requirements

The Immunogenetics Transplantation Laboratory (ITL) is one of the country's premiere academic and research institutions which provides specialized diagnostic services for allogeneic transplantation and conducts related research. The laboratory provides support for blood, bone marrow, kidney, pancreas, liver, heart, lung, small bowel, and cornea transplantation and is a national reference laboratory and serves as the referee laboratory for the ASHI proficiency testing program. It also serves as a core laboratory for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Immune Tolerance Network and provides support for several national clinical trials.

Required Qualifications
* Graduation from college with a major in an appropriate scientific field, possession of a clinical laboratory scientist license or a similar license of equal or higher level issued by the State Department of Health; and two years of experience as a licensed Clinical Laboratory Scientist; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of duties assigned to the position
* Current California license as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) Generalist or Clinical Histocompatibility Scientist (CHS)
* Be able to work with personal computers
* Be able to perform on-call duties including reporting to the laboratory within an hour of notice or call
* Be able to work variable shifts as required by laboratory operations including holidays, weekends, nights and early mornings
* Accurate and be able to process multiple samples without switches
* Strong analytical, investigative, reporting and communication skills
* Must be effective as a member of a team
* Proven record of being reliable and be able to multi-task
* Be able to work independently with minimum supervision
* Tidy and orderly

Preferred Qualifications
* Advance degree in a relevant field e.g., Immunology, Biochemistry, Genetics
* Minimum five years of relevant experience as a licensed technologist in a clinical laboratory; two of which are in HLA laboratory
* Minimum three years of relevant experience in Quality Management / Quality Control
* Working knowledge of antigens and genetics of the HLA system and be able to interpret results correctly

* Current California license as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) Generalist or Clinical Histocompatibility Scientist (CHS)
