Job Summary JOB OVERVIEW The Gastroenterology (GI) immunology research focuses on the human microbiome and its relationship with chronic inflammatory diseases including asthma and inflammatory bowel disease. The Staff Research Associate II (SRA II) will perform experimental techniques, including processing samples for microbiome analyses using biomarker, metagenomic, and transcriptomic sequencing tools, in addition to bacterial isolation, establishing stocks of strains, and human immune cell assays. The individual will assist with microbiome data analyses.
The SRA II works under the direct supervision of the Principal Investigator (PI), but is expected independently to organize experimental data and to keep detailed records of experiments.
We are seeking a highly talented and motivated candidate to contribute to our human microbiome studies. The successful candidate will be expected to apply bioinformatics and statistical tools to enable analysis and interpretation of microbial sequence datasets. Candidates will be expected to work independently, while contributing to a number of collaborative projects. The successful candidates will report directly to the Director, but will work closely with collaborators at institutions nationwide. Target start date ASAP.

At UCSF, Division of Gastroenterology (GI) specialists are skilled in the diagnosis and management of the full range of gastrointestinal diseases, including disorders of the esophagus, stomach, intestine, pancreas and liver.
The mission of the Division of Gastroenterology is threefold: to provide state-of-the-art patient care for GI and liver diseases, to prepare GI trainees to become academic leaders and to develop new knowledge about GI and liver diseases through basic and clinical research.

Required Qualifications * BA/BS degree in microbiology or related physical sciences and one or more years of recent, directly related work experience following degree completion, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position; or an equivalent combination of education and experience * Facility with scientific English, and computer (Macintosh or PC) literacy * Experience with the following techniques required: Processing samples for microbiome data generation and analyses Bacterial isolation and establishment of stocks of strains Human immune cell isolation and assays Sample extraction using in-house optimized protocols PCR amplification, purification and quantification Q-PCR * Proven accuracy and demonstrated ability to manage different projects simultaneously with the ability to independently prioritize assignments; demonstrated ability to work with a diverse group of people at all levels within the organization
