The Research Specialist will work on multiple mental and behavioral health related research and evaluation projects. One project is funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) which provides APU with funding to provide student training around priorities targeting the Opioid Epidemic greatly challenging local communities through a Provider Clinical Support System-PCSS Training Program that targets NP students. The Research Specialist will be responsible for developing the training implementation protocol, including monitoring training completion, data collection protocols and engaging with NP faculty and community preceptor sites around training and technical assistance needs. The Research Associate will be responsible for written and verbal communication, knowledge of the training protocols, and coordinating training events and reporting back to SAMHSA of the training. Additionally, the Research Specialist will coordinate and work with team members and other project liaisons or stakeholders in a professional manner.

Required Education

  • Preferred Master's degree or Ph.D. in social science research or closely related field highly preferred.
  • Exceptional candidates with Bachelor's degree in social science research or closely related field required.

Required Experience

  • 1-2 years of experience working as part of a social science research team.

Primary Duties/Essential Functions

  • Responsible for daily electronic timekeeping as it applies to the scope of this position.
  • Regular, punctual attendance as required by the supervisor based on department needs.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Coordination of the SAMHSA PCSS training with NP faculty and students.
  • Work with EPG technology consultant on the management of PCSS web-based training.
  • Conduct data management functions related to SAMHSA PCSS training Project, including data entry and data analysis.
  • Write reports related to SAMHSA PCSS training Project.
  • Coordinate site visits with community practice sites, summits, and other needed technical assistance related to the SAMHSA PCSS training Project.
  • Participate in project monthly meetings and trainings and webinars related to projects (e.g. trainings that enhance skills in carrying out project activities).

  • Perform other duties related to the position as required by the supervisor.
  • May be needed to work at alternative Regional Campuses or Sites.


  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage details and follow through.
  • Must be collaborative and an effective team member and team builder.
  • Skill in conducting literature reviews and writing up reports.
  • Skill in data entry and analysis, including tables and figures, as well as demonstrated knowledge of computers and software for data analysis (SPSS) and word processing.
  • Professional/research writing skills
  • Skill in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Google Apps for presentations of training, reports and conferences.
  • Willingness and ability to maintain certifications in the responsible conduct of research.
  • Must be comfortable working independently, taking initiative and working collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, verbally and in writing, with project team, staff liaisons, and other project stakeholders.
  • Organizational skills for assisting with project material (agendas, minutes, and results from literature searches).
  • Willingness to be flexible in work hours depending on projects needs and requirements.

Physical Demands

  • Requires repetitive motion and sitting at computer keyboard.
  • Hearing and speaking on the telephone.
  • Meetings may require walking and/or driving to various University locations.
  • Ability to pull, push, bend, grasp, reach and lift up to 20 lbs.
  • Must be able to climb stairs multiple times in a work day.

Visual Demands

  • Computer monitor and reading.


  • Pleasant office setting, comfortable temperature.


  • Proficient in Google Apps., Microsoft Office, Word, and Excel.


  • Grade: 9: $23.58 - $30.65 hourly.
  • Salary will be commensurate with qualifications, experience, and internal equity.
