Job Description

The Research Specialist will work on multiple mental and behavioral health related research and evaluation projects. One project is focused on developing a statewide framework for evidence-based programs (EBPs) for primary prevention programs for at-risk youth. This is a collaborative effort between APU and the California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). The Research Specialist will be responsible for reviewing and implementing meta analytic research on EBP frameworks used nationally and throughout different states, including best practice models and challenges to consider when adopting EBP standards in California. The Research Associate will be responsible for written and verbal communication, knowledge of the research and literature reviews, and conducting meta-analysis related research. Additionally, the Research Specialist will coordinate and work with team members and other project liaisons or stakeholders in a professional manner.

Required Education

  • Preferred Master's degree or Ph.D. in social science research or closely related field highly preferred.
  • Exceptional candidates with Bachelor's degree in social science research or closely related field required.

Required Experience

  • 1-2 years of experience working as part of a social science research team.

Primary Duties/Essential Functions

  • Conducting systematic literature reviews for projects and organizing a framework /guidelines that details specific meta-analytical methodological activities.
  • Evaluate the existing body of empirical literature regarding EBPs best suited for prevention of substance use among youth populations for developing EBP framework and tools for DHCS use.
  • Collaborate with team on implementing data analysis and protocols for data related tasks.
  • Generate research reports and presentations of findings.
  • Coordinate project monthly meetings and trainings and webinars related to projects (e.g. trainings that enhance skills in carrying out project activities).
  • Scheduling meetings for project-related interagency and multidisciplinary partners.
  • Development of project materials (agendas, PowerPoint presentations, handouts, reports) and report writing.
  • Assisting research faculty with administrative aspects of projects.
  • Responsible for daily electronic timekeeping as it applies to the scope of this position.
  • Regular, punctual attendance as required by the supervisor based on department needs.
  • Perform other duties related to the position as required by the supervisor.
  • May be needed to work at alternative Regional Campuses or Sites.

Skills

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage details and follow through.
  • Must be collaborative and an effective team member and team builder.
  • Skill in conducting literature reviews and writing up reports.
  • Skill in data entry and analysis, including tables and figures, as well as demonstrated knowledge of computers and software for data analysis (SPSS) and word processing.
  • Professional/research writing skills
  • Skill in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Google Apps for presentations of training, reports and conferences.
  • Willingness and ability to maintain certifications in the responsible conduct of research.
  • Must be comfortable working independently, taking initiative and working collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, verbally and in writing, with project team, staff liaisons, and other project stakeholders.
  • Organizational skills for assisting with project material (agendas, minutes, and results from literature searches).
  • Willingness to be flexible in work hours depending on projects needs and requirements.

Physical Demands

  • Requires repetitive motion and sitting at computer keyboard.
  • Hearing and speaking on the telephone.
  • Meetings may require walking and/or driving to various University locations.
  • Ability to pull, push, bend, grasp, reach and lift up to 20 lbs.
  • Must be able to climb stairs multiple times in a work day.

Visual Demands

  • Computer monitor and reading.

Environment

  • Pleasant office setting, comfortable temperature.

Technologies

  • Proficient in Google Apps., Microsoft Office, Word, and Excel.

Compensation

  • Grade 9: $23.58 - $30.65 hourly
  • Salary will be commensurate with qualifications, experience, and internal equity.
