With origins from historic programs such as Apollo and Pioneer to present-day satellite programs, Moog brings heritage-based solutions to spacecraft mechanisms technology. The spacecraft mechanisms facility in Chatsworth, California includes a fully-integrated engineering/design, manufacturing and test capability.

Moog spacecraft products are flexible to meet customer requirements for a wide breadth of applications ranging from commercial to government flight programs

Job Summary:

The Test Engineer is responsible for independently overseeing and managing all aspects of test of assigned programs from the early proposal stage to the final testing.  The Test Engineer may help lead (under direction of the Testlab Manager or Supervisor) a team of Test Engineer/Conductors and Technicians to fulfill all cost, schedule, and technical requirements related to test.

What you’ll be working on day to day:

The Test Department has the responsibility of managing, overseeing and performing test of all end products. The majority of the products are high precision electromechanical devices that are used on satellites or spacecraft. Therefore, each hardware must undergo rigorous tests in ambient, vibration, thermal and vacuum conditions.  This requires test procedures to be written, test equipment and tooling to be designed and fabricated, test schedules to be generated and maintained, and product to be tested and managed until delivery.

The Test Engineer will be the point person for ensuring that all of the above described activities are performed on time and within budget.  You will have some responsibilities as a Cost Account Manager for test, and will be involved in programs from the early proposal stage to the completion of the program.  With minimal supervision, you will perform a variety of tasks and deal directly with the Program Manager, the Project Engineer, and the customer.

In the proposal phase of a program, the Test Engineer will research the requirements and estimate the cost to test the product.  In the early stage of a program, the Test Engineer will define the test parameters and methods using the customer's requirement specification.  Then, you will generate the test plan and the test procedures and work with the customer to obtain approval of these documents.  The Test Engineer will also ensure that all necessary test tooling and equipment are available or fabricated.  As necessary, the Test Engineer will seek assistance from Senior Test Engineers and/or the Testlab Manager.

When the product is in test, you will be responsible for ensuring that the test is completed on time and within budget.  In order to do this, you will generate standard hours and schedule for the test.  You must monitor and track the progress of testing through significant phases of test.  You will also review and verify test data and analyze results as necessary.  The Test Engineer will also take the lead in troubleshooting and fact-finding test discrepancies as they arise.  The Test Engineer must schedule work and help direct the Test Engineer/Conductors and Technicians to ensure those tasks are completed efficiently.  As necessary, or as directed by the Testlab Manager (or Supervisor), you will be required to perform production testing in an effort to maintain test schedules.

Therefore you should have excellent communication and organizational skills, proficiency in technical writing, good analytical skills, and some experience with CAD and design.  You should also be a quick learner, self-motivated, work well in a team environment, multi-task, and take ownership of a task with minimal supervision.  Additionally, you should be comfortable in a leadership/supervisory position and be skilled in dealing with others in a professional and diplomatic manner.

In all phases of the job, the Test Engineer is governed by technical, cost, and schedule requirements and must be able to work under pressure with minimum error and maximum efficiency.  In some cases you will make critical decisions based on technical knowledge and common sense.  And in rare cases, you must be flexible enough to perform some tasks out of the scope of this position in order to fulfill the requirements

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or related field. Mechanical or Electrical Engineer degree preferred.

  • 2 years of experience in related field (Test Engineering experience is preferred).

  • Knowledge of MS Office tools.

  • Technical writing and communication skills.

  • Computer programming (LabVIEW) experience preferred.

  • Human relation skills (good communication, attitude, teamwork, flexible) to deal with internal and external customers.

  • Knowledge and/or experience with thermal vacuum systems, vibration testing, CAD

  • This position will require access to US Export Controlled information.

What’s in it for you?

  • Flexible Planned Vacation

  • Outstanding Health Benefits

  • Generous 401K company contribution and match
