THE ROLE

Reporting to the Executive Director of Planned Giving, the Director of Planned Giving will manage, plan, coordinate and implement a comprehensive estate planning and gift program; interpret and apply laws and regulations to all aspects of charitable giving; obtain planned gifts; develop and expand major/planned giving donor relationships; and broaden the philanthropic constituency through major/planned giving donor fundraising.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Demonstrates Providence St. Joseph Health's core values of dignity, justice, compassion, integrity and excellence to customers, employees, and visitors; and provides quality service in the performance of work assignments and duties.
  • Develops and implements an effective planned giving strategy that takes into account the unique mission of PSJH and the special needs of donors and potential donors.
  • Develops, monitors and updates a comprehensive one-year and long-range strategic plan including measurable goals and objectives for planned giving program.
  • Identifies, cultivates, solicits and stewards current and prospective donors who have the ability to execute a major/planned gift.
  • Formulates individualized solicitation strategies for planned giving prospects.
  • In consultation with donor's advisers, provides donors with legal and tax information regarding bequests and life income gifts.
  • Drafts and reviews gift illustrations and legal documents.
  • With counsel, advises the Foundation and Medical Centers on legal matters relating to planned giving, with specific regard for legal requirements and consequences.
  • Ensures implementation of systems to avoid potential litigation risks related to planned giving.
  • Protects the best interests of the existing and potential donor base while advising donors of potential means for donating property and/or funds to the Foundation.
  • Responds to inquiries concerning planned gifts and bequests in a timely manner.
  • Tracks estate gifts from probate to completion.
  • Works closely with other Foundation staff on cultivating annual, major, and planned giving prospects.
  • Identifies, cultivates, and educates financial professionals (attorneys, financial/estate planners, realtors) about PHS and its mission.
  • Develops and conducts planned giving seminars for potential donors and/or professionals.
  • Develops budgets and other necessary long- and short-term planning processes to ensure continuity and growth to the program.
  • Oversees and ensures quality of all mailings and/or publications internally and/or externally that are related to planned giving.
  • Provides staffing for the Planned Giving Committee and participates on committees as directed.
  • Manages the planned giving recognition society.
  • Maintains expertise in technical aspects of planned giving.
  • Protects the best interests of the existing and potential donor base while advising donors of potential means for donating property and/or funds to the Foundation.
  • Oversees planned gift donor records and database.
  • Assists the Controller in providing an audit trail for planned giving transactions.
  • Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, improving organization performance program, and safety standards.
  • Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations.
  • Attends and serves on professional/civic service organizations as hospital/foundation representative as required
  • Attends meetings as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or requested.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's Degree; or equivalent educ/experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, and/or Financial Planning (preferred)
  • J.D.
  • A law degree and experience in the practice of law and/or accounting/financial planning is preferred. Knowledge in areas of taxation, trust and estates, probate, corporations, contracts, and real estate is strongly encouraged
  • upon hire: Certified as a Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) and/or Certified Specialist in Planned Giving
  • 8 years of experience in planned giving or related field at a large non-profit institution;
  • strategic planning; proposal development; and planned giving portfolio management
  • Demonstrated experience and success with estate planning and major gift solicitation
  • 5-8 years of leadership experience.
