What does the job involve?

Summary- Inspect ferrous and non-ferrous metal parts for flaws using a fluorescent penetrant or dye check inspection process. Be thoroughly familiar with the scope and limitations of the applicable NDT method and be capable of organizing NDT investigations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Under general supervision, must be able to perform a variety of job duties including, but not limited to:

  • Inspects ferrous and non-ferrous parts by the penetrant process to check for discontinuities in parts that would be detrimental to the operation of the complete unit.
  • Removes or explores the extent of surface flaws, using abrasives or files.
  • Uses caustic soda or acid etch to determine the nature of defects.
  • Uses black light and comparison plate to determine acceptance of fluorescent inspected parts or assemblies.
  • Visually checks parts.
  • Ability to accept or reject parts based on the location the type of defect and the stress the part will be subjected to in operation per blueprint specifications.
  • Identifies defect as being caused by cleaning, heat treatment, and/ or manufacturing or a combination of the above factors.
  • Checks blueprints in some cases to determine whether the tolerances will allow the part to be reworked,
  • Writes up rework or reject tickets.
  • Perform rework, repair, and other operations with the work described.
  • Follow all Senior policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience:

  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree; or 2 years of related experience and/ or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must have Level I Penetrant Certification.

Required Skills:

  • Language: Ability to read, comprehend, and communicate simple instructions in English.
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply a general understanding to carry out detailed, written and oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Mathematical Ability: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Must be able to use shop math.
  • Other Abilities: Must be able to read and interpret blueprints. Must be able to perform all the work operations as described in the duties listed, and have knowledge of necessary tools and equipment. A Penetrant Inspection Level II shall have a minimum of 32 hours of documented formal training in accordance with approved training outlines, and a minimum of 400 hours of documented experience. This individual must pass the examination for certification if required.

Tools used:

  • Hand tools, measuring instruments, scales, marking pencils or crayons, and inspection instruments.

Materials used:

  • Ferrous and non-ferrous metals and their alloys in the form of sheet tubular stock, casting, forgings, extrusions, machined and formed parts.

ITAR Compliance:
