Full Salary Range: Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience; the budget for the position; and the application of fair, equitable, and consistent pay practices at the University. The full salary range for this position is $67,200 to $119,600/yr. The budgeted annual salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $67,200 to $90,000/yr.

Work Location: 2439 Bren Hall

Working Days/Hours: Monday - Friday / 8:00AM - 5:00PM

Brief Summary of Job Duties

The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Coordinator works to promote and enhance a culture of inclusion and appreciation for diverse cultures, heritages, orientations, and backgrounds; leads the Bren School's efforts to provide a safe and inclusive environment for students, staff and faculty. Plans and implements diversity programs and initiatives. Collaborates with staff from Admissions and Student Affairs to recruit and support graduate students from diverse backgrounds. Serves as a staff coordinator of the Diversity Committee and a Diversity Officer for UCSB's Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Organizes and leads trainings for faculty, staff, and students; and advises the deans, senior managers, faculty, and staff on matters related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. The Coordinator reports to the Assistant Dean with frequent consultation and informal reporting to the Associate Dean of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

Required Qualifications

  • 3-5 years of relevant experience, such as advising students from diverse and traditionally underrepresented backgrounds.
  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent learning attained through experience and/or training.
  • 1-3 years of awareness and/or experience with environmental science and/or higher education.
  • Knowledge of trends/literature/practices of diversity, equity and inclusion in higher education.
  • Strong organization and time management skills.
  • Exceptional attention to detail.
  • Efficient and able to prioritize tasks easily.
  • Able to manage many projects with frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of students, faculty, staff, employers, and community members.
  • Skilled in computer applications, including word processing, data management and analysis, and visual presentation software.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree or Ph.D. degree in a related area.

Job Functions/Duties

Strategic Planning 10%

Implements the Bren School's DEI Strategic plan, including assessing its success and modifying the plan, as needed, to achieve success.

Builds coalitions of faculty, students and staff to address issues of respect, inclusion and equity.

Serves as a staff coordinator of the Diversity Committee and advises faculty, staff, and students on matters related to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Serves as a Diversity Officer (together with a faculty member) representing the Bren School to UCSB's Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Advises Bren School staff on issues related to fundraising for, recruitment of, and academic advising to support underrepresented students.

Program Development and Implementation 40%

Develops, coordinates, and facilitates programs and resources dedicated to student diversity, inclusion, belonging, and equity.

Implements programs within the DEI Strategic plan (such as the Bren Environmental Diversity Leaders & Internship program and associated fellows)

Organizes events (such as the Environmental Justice Symposium), workshops, training, and visiting speakers to support a diverse, equitable, and inclusive community.

Develops and administers programs that emphasize awareness and celebration of cultural and ethnic differences; self-assessment of possible prejudices; and greater acceptance, understanding, and ability to relate to others.

Works collaboratively with Academic Programs, Admissions and Student Affairs, and Career Development units to provide guidance and direction on equity and inclusion.

Supports and assists in student mentoring and internship programs (e.g., Brentorship, Bren Environmental Diversity Leaders and Internship Program).

Recruitment and Admissions 20%

Develops and implements strategies to recruit underrepresented students, faculty, and staff. This may require attendance at student fairs and outreach to relevant societies and organizations.

Plans and participates in receptions and visitation days for prospective and admitted students.

Student Training 15%

Develops and leads orientation programs for new graduate students to promote multicultural awareness, understanding, and sensitivity.

Organizes and leads diversity trainings for students, creates a welcoming and inclusive environment for students, and disseminates resources to students.

Provides support to students across a spectrum of diverse backgrounds, with a special focus on historically underrepresented groups.

Faculty/Staff Training 10%

Organizes and leads trainings for faculty and staff on issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Provides support to faculty and staff as they undertake their advising and teaching roles with students from underrepresented groups.

Provides training and support to Equity Advisors on faculty search committees to guide equitable and open search processes.

Administration 5%

Plans and manages budget for activities and initiatives related to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Provides the Associate Dean of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion with a year-end report and other reports as requested.
