Under the general supervision of the Division Dean of Applied Science, Business & Technology the Associate Professor/Professor of Automotive Technology teaches organized classes primarily in the Automotive Technology discipline(s); the primary responsibility is to teach 10 units in the assigned discipline. Instruction will include lecture and laboratory assignments in beginning and advanced automotive technology, including electrical systems, tune-up, engine performance, engine repair, brakes, transmissions, fuel systems, emission controls, computer controls, and air conditioning. The instructor will order and maintain automotive parts and supplies and be responsible for maintaining an automotive training laboratory in a professional and businesslike manner.

Responsibilities and Duties

Duties and responsibilities may include, but not limited to the following:

  1. Instruct courses in Automotive Technology in accordance with credit course outlines approved by the Board of Trustees.
  2. Conduct related laboratory instruction, including safe handling of materials and equipment as required.
  3. Maintain expertise in current teaching methods, discipline knowledge, and discipline specific technologies.
  4. Assist students in achieving stated course objectives. Evaluate the progress of each student and notify students in need of counseling services and/or tutorial assistance. Track student learning outcomes and maintain records of student learning outcomes.
  5. Participate in the departmental process of curriculum review, modification, and the assessment of student learning outcomes in order to make the program successful.
  6. Support the Division Dean in cooperating with campus and community groups to provide programs, courses, and information relevant to the needs of the students and various programs.
  7. Coordinate with other faculty in the selection of textbooks, audiovisual and other instructional materials.
  8. Complete various reporting procedures as required for student evaluation, course reporting, equipment and supply purchases and tracking, and budget development.
  9. Assist the Division Dean in the preparation of required reports by providing requested information.
  10. Attend various departmental, divisional and campus-wide activities and events as required.
  11. Plan and complete approved professional development flex activities each semester.
  12. Perform other necessary duties as assigned by the Division Dean and as outlined in Board Policy.
  13. Attend industry-related meetings, workshops, and job sites to keep current with new developments and knowledge in the automotive technology field.
  14. Maintain manufacturer-training requirements to stay current with current technologies and maintain manufacturer certifications in primary courses being taught, minimum 20 hours per year.
  15. Maintain all certifications and responsibilities to allow the college to be an ASE Master Automotive certified NATEF training center.
  16. Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree and two years of experience, or any associate degree and six years of experience.
  • Demonstrated evidence of successful teaching experience.
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience in teaching postsecondary courses in Automotive Technology or other technical level.
  • B.S. or B.A. degree in auto mechanics or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated experience working with and/or teaching courses/workshops related to alternative fuels.
  • Master and L1 ASE Certifications
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt teaching strategies and techniques to students from different cultures and ethnic groups.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare and present information in classroom and laboratory instructional settings.
  • Demonstrated ability to use innovative and creative teaching techniques and equipment, including the use of multimedia hardware and software and on-line instructional techniques.
  • Demonstrated leadership in developing curriculum for discipline specific courses and/or programs.
  • Demonstrated leadership, ability, and desire to stay current in the field.
  • Demonstrated leadership and ability to work with business and industry in order to coordinate the educational program with the needs of the community.
  • Demonstrated utilization of individualized learning methods to meet the needs of students.
  • Demonstrated utilization of innovative methods and adaptability to change in order to meet rapidly changing curriculum and demands in automotive technology.
  • Demonstrated ability to obtain certification to teach manufacturer-level course material.
  • Experience as a journey level mechanic with extensive experience in the areas listed in the job description, preferably with manufacturer-level dealership experience.
  • Experience in automatic and manual transmissions, brakes and suspension, engine re-building, auto electrics, tune-up, emission controls, and electronic and computerized applications in the modern automotive trade.
  • Demonstrated successful experiences in organization of programs, community activities, and working with a broad range of ethnic groups and students with varying abilities.
  • Demonstrated evidence of initiative and innovation as demonstrated by activities in an educational or industrial setting.
  • Expertise in the use of computers for teaching and management of online course information. Familiarity and ability to teach in a distance learning environment.
  • Interest in or knowledge of teaching online and other distance education courses.
  • Interest in or knowledge of teaching courses in a large lecture setting.
Supplemental Information

Effective July 1, 2016, adjunct faculty maximum initial placement on the Hourly Salary Schedule shall be step 5 (initial salary placement plus 4 years of teaching/relevant experience) of the appropriate class (SJCTA Union Contract: Article XVIII 18.7; Appendix A-2)
