POSITION TITLE: Laboratory & Research Safety Manager

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Laboratory & Research Safety Manager, reporting to the Senior Director of EHS, will provide leadership and support to the Scripps Research EHS Laboratory Safety Program by promoting and supporting a comprehensive laboratory safety program throughout the institute's research laboratories. They will be a critical member of the EHS team, working to foster a positive, proactive laboratory safety program, by collaborating with Principal Investigators (PI), laboratory managers, safety officers, and senior leadership to promote best management practices.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Lead department efforts to advance a strong laboratory safety culture across all Scripps Research laboratory disciplines, incorporating EHS strategic initiatives into campus laboratory operations.
  • Work closely with PIs and their laboratories to integrate safety programs and services including technical assistance, audits, training, and consultation.
  • Reimagine the current laboratory safety audit program and collaborate with EHS team to collectively improve and ensure research safety at the institute.
  • Provide guidance and expertise on behalf of EHS to institutional safety committees.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory agencies and serve as the primary liaison with Cal/OSHA, National Institutes of Health (NIH), Centers for Disease Control (CDC), CA Radiological Health Branch, US DOT, US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), San Diego County Department of Environmental Health & Quality CUPA, San Diego Fire Department, and other compliance agencies.
  • Maintain a primary key role in the Scripps Research's Incident Response Team (IRT) by supporting the institute in all emergent situations.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's degree in life sciences; working knowledge of synthetic or biochemistry preferred.
  • 5+ years of laboratory safety work experience in life science research environments; academic experience a plus.
  • Adaptable to changing priorities while effectively managing multiple commitments, at times on tight deadlines.
  • Strategic mindset coupled with the ability and willingness to roll up sleeves where necessary and desire to constantly improve the status quo.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills with proven experience in cultivating cross-collaborative working relationships across an organization and ability to influence at all levels
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), Certified Biosafety Professional (CBP) preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide safety guidance and technical reports to both scientific colleagues and lay persons.
  • Strong understanding of hazard identification, risk assessment and risk communication.
  • Experience conducting laboratory audits, risk assessments and leading regulatory compliance audits.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide judgement, innovation, and advanced technical expertise in applying regulations and best practices to a diverse collection of research laboratories.
  • Ability to wear PPE appropriate for laboratory environments and to respond to a chemical, biological or radiological materials spill.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suites and EHS management software.
  • This is an on-campus position requiring 4 days per week working onsite from our La Jolla campus, with flexibility to work 1 day per week remotely from home.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

May include: Stationary position for an extended period of time, traverse campus/facility as needed, operate machinery such as computer, phone, copy machine; exposure to cold or hot temperatures.

COMPENSATION:

The expected hiring range for this position is $98,000 annually to $125,000 annually, commensurate with experience.
