Job Summary

Under the direct supervision of the Manager of Interpreter Services, the Medical Translator is responsible for the translation of written materials for the organization from source to target language. This process includes receiving written materials with English (or other source language) content and translating it into a target language, as well as completing all steps in the translation quality control process, including revision, editing, proofreading and other related activities. Assesses and monitors documents in neutral target language to incorporate health literacy tenets as necessary, while ensuring universal target audience understanding of the information translated. The medical translator works in collaboration with clients to seek meaning clarification and resolve linguistic challenges that may arise in the two working languages.

Essential Functions

Must perform all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the hospital's policies and procedures, including its Service Standards and its Code of Conduct.

  • Performs medical translation for patients and their families. Independently translates, edits and proofreads simple After Visit Summaries in an accurate, clear and timely manner (e.g., maternity, well baby, basic surgery procedures, etc.). Independently, translates, edits and proofreads complex After Visit Summaries in an accurate, clear and timely manner (e.g., correspondence, Transplant, Oncology, medical procedures and instructions, etc., and other pertinent documents as necessary).

  • Performs translation of vital and educational documents while maintaining the original meaning, intent and tone, including but not limited to informed consent, discharge instructions, complaint/grievance letters and forms, notice of eligibility criteria, intake forms, internal medical records, lab and radiology reports, patient questionnaires, instructions for procedures/test preparation, etc..

  • Works in collaboration with other translators and authors of original documents to seek meaning clarification and resolve linguistic challenges that may arise in the working languages.

  • Reads and thoroughly understands the context of given material, uses specialized dictionaries and translation tools, and proofreads finished pieces of work. Proofreads translated texts, ensuring grammar, spelling and punctuation accuracy. Follows up with internal team members and clients to ensure translation meets their needs.

  • Performs translation of video scripts from one language to another.

  • Adheres to and contributes to organization style guide to achieve consistent document quality.

  • Conducts research on medical terminology as it applies to specific translation projects.

  • Participates in Interpreter Services Professional Practice Council

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities as well as possession of any required licenses or certifications is qualifying.

Education: Bachelor's degree in translation and interpretation

Experience: Two (2) years of medical translation experience

Licensure/Certification: ATA certification required within 24 months.

OR

Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university

Experience: Four (4) years of medical translation experience.

Licensure/Certification: ATA certification required within 24 months.

  • Native Near native in working language pair.

  • Advanced Knowledge of Medical Terminology.

  • Ability to produce ready-to-use translated content that meets internal quality standards.

  • Advanced knowledge of cultural, health literacy and perceptual factors that may affect patient treatment and communication.

  • Ability to establish and maintain excellent client relationships, exhibit exemplary interpersonal skills and exercise sound judgment and professionalism in business and personnel matters.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.

  • Ability to work well with individuals at all levels of the organization.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

  • Ability to manage individual quality work in a timely fashion.

  • Ability to prioritize tasks and projects based on turnaround time specified by coordinator and clients.

  • Ability to utilize and cross-reference specialized dictionaries and translation tools to check quality of translations.

  • Proficient in computer-assisted translation tools

Pay Range

Compensation is based on the level and requirements of the role.

Salary within our ranges may also be determined by your education, experience, knowledge, skills, location, and abilities, as required by the role, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.

Typically, new team members join at the minimum to mid salary range.

Minimum to Midpoint Range (1.0 FTE): $81,952.00 to $92,965.60
