What does the job involve?

Summary: This occupation requires inspecting all types of assemblies, sub-assemblies, final assemblies, and installations of machine parts, forgings, stampings, sheet metal forming for proper material, quality, machining dimensions and functional usability.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Under general supervision, must be able to perform a variety of job duties including, but not limited to:

  • Makes inspection layout and first article inspection on machined parts, forgings, stampings, and sheet metal forms for use as reference guides to determine conformance to proper dimensions.
  • Inspects all types of assemblies, sub-assemblies, final assemblies and installations.
  • Records all inspection data and fills out all acceptance test procedures.
  • Re-inspects all rework to meet requirements.
  • Makes progressive and final inspection of components involving numerous precision tolerances dimension and angles that must be inspected by precision measuring instruments where no inspection jigs and/ or fixtures are available.
  • Stamps or otherwise approves acceptable parts and prepares paperwork as required.
  • Orders rejections and rework.
  • Makes out rejection tags, inspection rework sheets, and properly records all data to quality control procedure.
  • Informs supervisor of all rejections.
  • Sets up and operates precision measuring instruments and gauges and all general inspection of equipment.
  • Assists and instructs lower rated personnel in all phases of quality control operations.
  • Performs re-inspection or other duties where work operations are essentially the same or of a less difficult nature.
  • Follow all Senior policies and procedure.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience:

  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree; and 3-5 years of related experience and/ or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Skills:

  • Language: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply a general understanding to carry out detailed, written and oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Mathematical Ability: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to use shop mathematics.
  • Other Abilities: Must be able to read and interpret blueprints. Must be able to apply a complete knowledge of inspection theory and practice. Must determine the acceptability of assemblies and parts. Must be able to use various precision measuring instruments to maintain quality control standards. Must be able to use tact and diplomacy with customer and government quality control representatives.

Tools used:

  • Welding inspection checking fixtures, micrometers, scales, surface plates and tables, inspection stamps.

Materials used:

  • Ferrous and non- ferrous metals and their alloys in the form of sheet tubular stock, machined and formed parts, welded parts and assemblies.
