Job Summary

The Clinical Research Administrative Director (Administrator) for the Division of Cardiology will partner with and report to the Associate Chief for Research. The incumbent will ensure that the Division conducts high-quality, scientifically important, and financially favorable clinical and translational research. There are four major responsibilities for this role. First, to serve as a strategic partner between the Division and outside entities, including companies / sponsors / funders as well as between the Division and other entities at UCSF (such as Contracts and Grants). Second, to collaborate with the Cardiology Clinical Research Infrastructure Manager Clinical Research Infrastructure to create, implement strategies, and develop standard operating procedures (SOPs) for clinical research training and ongoing conduct of clinical research. Third, to serve as a resource and provide administrative leadership to the faculty on staff conducting original research, contribute to grant proposals, provide recommendations for delegation and enhancing efficiency among the staff, and working with colleagues at UCSF and outside entities to help organize study activities. Fourth, to lead initiatives (including hiring and managing personnel or establishing collaborations with other units) to establish and provide leadership and guidance to a variety of infrastructure for conducting clinical and translational research in the Division. This will involve, in part, actively seeking opportunities for participation in clinical trials that will promote the Division, the faculty PI or that are particularly innovative and scientifically meritorious or that are clearly financially favorable to the Division and aggressively negotiating contracts with industry sponsors. The Administrator will determine the budget for studies and negotiate with industry sponsors for fair compensation. The Administrator will work with the financial analysts to track and report on ongoing revenues and costs to the clinical research enterprise of the division and make recommendations to the research and division leadership to help ensure financial sustainability. The Administrator will work with personnel across UCSF to maintain and grow opportunities for original faculty-initiated research, including serving as a liaison to advocate for space as needed, to make recommendations regarding adequate and efficient staffing needs, and to provide information that may be useful in evaluating staff performance. The Administrator will work with financial analysts and other staff to consistently track, update and report on study budgets and formulate recommendations as needed to help maintain the financial health of the clinical research enterprise at various levels: individual study, PI portfolio, and clinical research infrastructure as a whole for the cost to the Division's various funding resources. The incumbent will assist in transferring research programs of new faculty recruits and starting up new programs for faculty.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

The Division of Cardiology is one of the largest clinical, research and training divisions of the Department of Medicine (DOM) at UCSF. Within the Division are sub-specialty sections for: General Cardiology; Adult Congenital Heart Disease; Advanced Heart Failure, Transplant, and Pulmonary Hypertension; Cardiac Electrophysiology; Cardio-Oncology and Immunology; Critical Care Cardiology; Echocardiography and Cardiac Imaging; Interventional Cardiology; and Preventive Cardiology. The Division runs several clinical practices in multiple sites, conducts basic and clinical research, and educates medical students, residents, clinical fellows and postdoctoral scholars through ACGME as well as non-ACGME training programs. The Division has 77 full-time faculty and has created a robust infrastructure within the section of Clinical Research. The goal is to continue to increase industry-sponsored research and to create a system that will assist a physician within the division to operationalize an investigator-initiated study. The purpose of this position is to carry out the needed tasks as a part of ongoing and future clinical and translational research projects in the Division of Cardiology.

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • Eight or more years of relevant experience
  • Seven or more years of managerial experience
  • Registered Nurse , Nurse Practitioner, or Physician Assistant with cardiology experience
  • RN with clinical experience (clinical experience can include serving as nurse coordinator for research studies)
  • Advanced practice nursing certifications, particularly in Public Health, Emergency Nursing and Basic Life Support
  • Experience directing multicenter clinical trials
  • Experience managing contracts and budgets
  • Experience writing successful IRB protocols
  • Experience successfully negotiating contracts with industry sponsors
  • Experience enrolling patients in multiple industry sponsored multi-center trials
  • Expert user of the campus' clinical information and documentation application programs. Technical proficiency in project management software
  • In depth academic knowledge and applied background in clinical research philosophy
  • Experience changing methods to fit needs of particular situations
  • Proven ability to translate clinical research philosophy, clinical and research objectives, policies and procedures into an operational plan
  • In depth knowledge of clinical research and drug development concepts, federal, state and local laws and regulations, and industry requirements regarding the proper conduct of clinical trials
  • In depth theoretical and operational knowledge of clinical and patient safety standards and regulations relating to clinical research
  • Demonstrable record of successfully running complex clinical research trials
  • Demonstrated experience in designing and implementing quality control, protocol, and quality assurance and program evaluation systems protocols according to accepted clinical standards
  • Proven management experience running high-performance cross-functional teams to achieve trial, individual and team goals and objectives
  • Excellent computer skills with all software of Microsoft Office, and graphic programs (Adobe)
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise tact and discretion in sensitive communications with patients and others
  • Demonstrated ability in handling a variety of confidential information appropriately
  • Excellent ability to establish collegial and productive relationships with prominent clinical investigators, research partners, industry and key opinion leaders in relevant therapeutic areas in order to develop and apply the strategic intent of the study
  • Excellent skills to work collaboratively and act persuasively in sensitive situations; skills in conflict management techniques
  • Ability to work creatively with others and solicit and incorporate their ideas when appropriate, to be critical about information and apply it appropriately, and to probe, challenge, and to question the status quo
