The Position:
Under the supervision of the Recreation Supervisor/Recreation Area Manager, this position provides reception and general administrative and program support in order to ensure the implementation and monitoring of instructional classes, camps, aquatic programs and other Parks & Recreation activities and services. The Senior Recreation Leader performs a variety of duties in the leadership position to assist with the daily operation of the City's aquatic, community and recreation centers. These items include but are not limited to: front desk operations, program/activity operations and supervision, facility management, including program/facility set-ups and tear-downs and basic cleaning and maintenance projects, special events support and other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Distinguishing Characteristics:
The incumbent will be comfortable with working independently or in multiple work environments ranging from basic cashiering operations to administrative and/or program functions. The work environment requires the ability to receive and respond to high traffic interaction, communicate effectively, and respond to customer concerns. Due to the varied nature of tasks and fast paced environment, it is critical that the incumbent is readily able to adapt to change. Independent judgment and initiative is required to identify, select, and apply the most appropriate of available guidelines and procedures, interpret precedents, and adopt standard methods or practices to meet variations in facts and/or conditions. They must have the ability to lead a staff and oversee the day-to-day operations. Senior Recreation leaders receive training, instruction and/or assistance from the Recreation Supervisor/Recreation Area Manager, is able to adjust when new or unusual situations arise, and is fully aware of the operating procedures and policies.

Key Responsibilities

Key responsibilities may include:

  • Providing excellent customer service
  • Assisting in the preparation of reports, contracts, data entry and management of critical documents and instructor files
  • Ensuring the health and safety of park guests
  • Directing and supervising participants of the program
  • Organizing and cleaning facility areas and equipment
  • Performing facility set-ups and tear-downs
  • Overseeing activities/programs
  • Performing basic custodial duties
  • Administering simple first-aid
  • Providing staff support
  • Serving as public relations person for the department
  • Proper opening and closing of buildings, including locks, alarms, etc.
  • Seeing that buildings and grounds are clean and well maintained
  • Establishing and maintaining relationships with park guests, volunteers, contracted vendors
  • Maintaining a fun and positive attitude; and other duties assigned
*Part-time employees cannot exceed 980 total hours worked within one fiscal year. This is a non-benefitted position.
Qualifications

Qualifications may include:

  • Ability to learn parks and recreation principles, services and programs, cleaning procedures, and basic first aid methods and techniques
  • Possess excellent customer service and communication skills
  • Demonstrate exceptional attention to detail
  • Effectively manage a high volume of customers, phone calls and other duties
  • Knowledgeable of basic computer software, including Microsoft Office skills
  • Learn and become proficient in the recreation activity management software solution (CivicRec)
  • Knowledgeable in cash handling and cashiering skills
  • Demonstrate ability to provide the necessary support to ensure the health and well-being of all participants and staff
  • Must be able to take direction as well as have the ability to take initiative
  • Learn procedures/daily operations/business practices
  • Work under limited supervision
  • Maintain accurate records and manual data systems
  • Plan and organize work to meet schedules and deadlines
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Establish, maintain, and foster cooperative and positive working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Ability to evaluate emergency situations and act decisively and effectively to resolve them
  • Communicate clearly, concisely, both orally and in writing
  • May be required to use personal vehicle during assigned shifts

Experience & Education

Education:
High school diploma or G.E.D. required.
Some college work experience desirable.

Special Requirements/License or Certificate
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Class C California Driver's License
Possession of, or ability to obtain, CPR and first aid certification

Special Requirements
Must have valid California State Driver's License
Must be at least 18 years of age
Must have some experience working with computers
Must have experience working with the public, work in a recreation, hospitality industry setting and active front office environment is desirable; some positions require experience working directly with youth.

Ability to lift 50 lbs., sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, squat, stoop, reach, and withstand exposure to the outdoors for extended periods of time; ability to travel to and work at different sites and locations.

Special Conditions
Must be available to work flexible schedule, as well as mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays; required to attend mandatory meeting/training sessions; must provide own transportation; some positions require meeting state of California tuberculosis test requirements.

Required Apparel
Person hired must wear standard apparel as prescribed by the Recreation Department
