Job Summary

This is primarily a clinical role focused on hospitalized individuals with unhealthy substance use. Under the general supervision of the Addiction Care Team (ACT) leadership and guided by policies and procedures of Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, the Behavioral Health Clinician (BHC) will offer support to patients. The BHC will provide hospitalized patients motivational interviewing, brief interventions, and therapy. The BHC will focus on care transitions including linkage to mental health, social needs, community resources, and referral to dual diagnosis programs. The BHC will have quality improvement experience and feel comfortable developing, implementing, leading, and evaluating innovative contingency management programs, group and individual treatment and liaising with hospital social workers and outpatient partners. The BHC will provide these services within a safety net hospital and by working closely with hospital staff, nurses, navigators, clinicians, and community partners.

The BHC will also provide daily supervision and support to the ACT Patient Navigators (PNs). They will be the first point of contact regarding complex social and behavioral issues. The BHC will assist in ensuring the quality of treatment delivery and with the administration and management of personnel, fiscal, and material resources.


Supervises staff involved in providing behavioral health services to patients with serious mental health disorders. Patient care may be provided by a combination of licensed clinicians, as well as counselors and crisis intervention specialists. Assists in ensuring the quality of treatment delivery. Department Description

The ACT is an interprofessional team that works with hospital-based medical teams to help diagnose SUD, provides motivational interviewing and harm reduction to patients, assists in care coordination tailored to patient needs, and initiates evidenced-based addiction treatment. The service is staffed by addiction medicine clinicians, patient navigators, a social worker, licensed vocational nurses, and other trainees.

The patient population includes low-income, medically and psychosocially complex individuals served by. Patients include a large proportion of structurally marginalized African American/Black, Latine , gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender individuals, and pregnant and post-partum patients.

The Division of Hospital Medicine (DHM) at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital is dedicated to excellence in teaching, research, clinical services, and quality/systems improvement. DHM members are key leaders within the hospital and are integral to efforts to improve the quality and efficiency of care. They work across each clinical service to improve the systems of care for all patients at ZSFG employing lean management concepts. The Division encompasses multiple acute care medical teams as well as the addiction care team, palliative medicine, and an acute care for the elderly service. There are 39 core faculty, 13 staff, 2 advance-practice providers, and 9 volunteer faculty. ACT launched in January 2019 within the DHM to provide compassionate, evidence-based treatment, and linkage to care centered in harm reduction to hospitalized patients with substance use disorders.

The ZSFG Department of Medicine's mission is to advance health by developing and supporting innovators in patient-centered care, scientific discovery, medical education, and public policy. The department encompasses 13 divisions, 200 core faculty, 107 volunteer faculty, and 466 staff, and had revenue of $191.2M in FY22.

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree or above in social work, psychology, or related field from an accredited university; and knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
  • Knowledge of psychiatric service operations and ability to apply concepts in an acute care setting.
  • Demonstrated supervisory skills to guide behavioral health providers on treatment methods for serious mental health disorders.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities and execute plans to meet deadlines.
  • Organizational skills for coordinating staff schedules and unit operations.
  • Working knowledge of human resources management practices and policies.
  • Knowledge of business software, specialized applications and EHR systems used in behavioral health clinics / clinical departments.
  • Ability to ensure patient care service standards are consistently met; assists staff with managing challenging patient interactions with sensitivity and skill.
  • Ability to perform all commonly applicable functions in word processing and spreadsheet software. Comprehensive knowledge of organization's patient record system to teach others.
  • Must demonstrate cultural humility and a strengths-based, recovery philosophy.
  • Demonstrated excellent oral/telephone communication skills and written documentation.
  • Excellent organizational and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated excellent attendance and reliability.
  • Knowledge and skill in conducting assessments, treatment planning, group and individual counseling, crisis intervention, and clinical case management with low-income clients with substance use disorders and serious mental illness.
  • Ability to assist staff in managing challenging client interactions with sensitivity and skill. Knowledge of psychiatric and medical terminology.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Spanish and/or Tagalog language fluency - Ability to speak and communicate effectively with Spanish- and/or Tagalog-speaking patients
  • Knowledge of medical center, HR and UC policies and processes. Knowledge of relevant psychiatric health services internal policies and external regulations.
  • Clinical experience serving diverse low-income individuals with substance use disorders and serious mental illness.

License/Certification

  • Licensed by the California Board of Behavioral Science Examiners (LCSW, LMFT, or LPCC), or the California Board of Psychology (Licensed psychologist)
