Job Summary

The Getty Research Institute seeks a Library Assistant/Metadata Assistant IV to work with the Research Services team at the Getty Library to fulfill Reproductions and Permissions requests submitted in the Special Collections Reading Room, mostly from Getty staff and onsite requestors. Reporting to the Metadata Specialist I, the Metadata Assistant IV's primary duties are to assist in the processing of daily requests for image orders, reviewing rights information and entering metadata into the OpenText Media Management System (OTMM) the Getty's Digital Asset Management System (DAM), thereby facilitating delivery, use, and re-use of each image requested for reproduction. Other duties may include, paging, shelving, and circulating Special Collections items using the Getty's integrated library system, Ex Libris' Alma and Primo, to manage library materials and patron requests, and working with colleagues to maintain storage vaults.

The Metadata Assistant IV provides services to a wide variety of staff and researchers, replies to routine queries, and refers more complex queries to the Metadata Specialist, reference librarians, or curators as appropriate. Participates in additional projects as assigned.

Major Job Responsibilities
    Search, identify, verify, evaluate, create, and edit metadata based on established procedures, standards, and best practices.
  • May interact with external researchers, and colleagues
  • May prepare materials for digitization
  • Applies comprehensive knowledge of technical standards, guidelines, theories and/or concepts
  • Work is guided by supervisor yet, may act under little to no supervision to define methods and procedures based upon expertise
  • Applies job skills and departmental policies and procedures to complete a wide range of complex tasks in creative and effective ways
  • May serve as a resource to others to resolve complex problems and issues
  • May contribute to the development of new concepts and techniques
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in art history or a related discipline preferred
  • Graduate course work in library & information science, art history or a related discipline preferred
  • Minimum 4 years related experience, preferably in an academic, arts, or cultural institution
  • Supervisory and training experience preferred

  • Familiarity with one foreign language preferred

  • Moderate knowledge of bibliographic metadata structure and guidelines
  • Some familiarity with and knowledge of intellectual property and copyright issues
  • Ability to lift at least 40 pounds
