Job Summary

The Director provides guidance and direction to ensure IT services are stable and performing through proactive monitoring and event management. The Director works with cross-functional IT units to ensure essential resources are engaged and focused on critical events as efficiently and effectively as possible. The Director follows the command center disciplines and ITIL practices and is a gatekeeper for production system stability within the Change and Release Management processes. The Director assumes command and control, including decision-making and communications during major and priority incidents, and works with other business incident commands.

The director serves as the senior IT leader for IT's business continuity plan and disaster recovery program. The Director develops, implements, and maintains policies, procedures, and programs to ensure the integrity and availability of UCSF's information systems and technologies. The Director works across IT to develop and maintain business continuity contingency and disaster recovery plans. Participates in assessments of the impact of potential disruptions in IT services, including declaring a disaster and activating the DR plan. Coordinates the development, training, and exercising of IT DR plans Establishing and maintaining detailed DR communications, and command and control plans through a change management process Interface with the IT technical staff to ensure that disaster recovery solutions are adequate, in place, maintained, and tested as part of the regular operational life cycle Establishing testing methodologies to ensure that all plans are sound and secure.

Department Description

This role is the senior leader of the Incident Command and reports to the Vice President of Infrastructure Services. The incident command is a critical part of Infrastructure Services and the UCSF Information Technology organization. The incident command provides essential IT services supporting UCSF's healthcare, education, and research missions.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience / training.
  • 10 years of experience managing an information technology organization.
  • Demonstrable experience building and managing successful projects and technical teams.
  • Strong leadership and staff development skills.
  • Knowledge of security best practices as well as encryption.
  • Uses and applies advanced Information Technology principles, theories, and concepts to manage and provide solutions to more complex and multi-dimensional problems.
  • Requires an in-depth knowledge of the applications programming development function and a broad knowledge of the IT organization.
  • Requires the ability to gather, organize, and analyze data in the completion of diverse functional assignments.
  • Is able to resolve issues using established parameters and own judgment.
  • Extensive or advanced knowledge of the subject area sufficient for strategic planning, technology assessment, and direction.
  • Extensive experience managing technical staff.
  • Experienced in leading change management activities and managing their impact across multiple units or departments.
  • Experience in the management of ongoing technology infrastructure acquisition and expansion, including the identification and integration of suitable emerging technologies.
  • Thorough knowledge of technical concepts and basic operating principles of data communications, computer hardware, vendor IT products, and software.
  • Ability to understand the process involved in adapting, integrating, and modifying existing programs or vendor-supplied products for use within a large and complex technical environment.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to effectively present technical topics to large groups with potentially varied levels of technical sophistication.
