Risk Program Specialist - Risk Management - Full Time 8 Hour Days (Exempt) (Non-Union) Keck Medicine of USC Hospital Los Angeles, California

The Risk Program Specialist supports the Office of Integrated Risk Management by providing departmental expertise in education, loss control, and prevention consisting of the development, coordination, and facilitation of risk education activities throughout the health system. This role is responsible for analyzing risk data to identify high-risk trends, creating proposals for targeted education initiatives, and assisting in the deployment of those initiatives. The Risk Program Specialist also conducts educational trainings, maintains the department's education materials, and assists with the coordination of risk prevention and loss control activities as needed. The role is critical to the Office of Integrated Risk Management's commitment to providing integrated, collaborative, and evidence-based risk management.

Essential Duties:

  • Education Activities: * Plans, develops, tracks, and conducts structured, scheduled educational sessions covering approved topics * Promotes risk education throughout the Keck Medicine of USC workforce by conducting outreach and awareness campaigns * Establishes and maintains a resource file/directory of information regarding available programs, services, contact persons, and avenues of access for education on high-risk topics * Facilitates the dissemination of information from the Patient Safety Organization (PSO), including evidence-based best practices for high-risk topics and coordinating facility participation in shared learning activities * Maintains the Risk Management Intranet site * Creates risk education materials (e.g., flyers, brochures, videos) * Builds and maintains curriculum for recurring education obligations (e.g., orientations, refresher trainings) * Assists with the preparation, tools, materials and presentations related to orientation, training and continuing education of staff
  • Business Analysis * Identifies high-risk trends from safety incident, grievance, and claims data * Assists in data analysis for risk assessment and risk analysis projects * Develops and presents accurate reports regarding program activities, departments/staff served, and other information as needed
  • Program/Project Coordination * Assists with the development and tracking of the annual risk education budget * Supports project/program functions such as planning, organizing, scheduling, tracking, and implementing activities to meet department objectives * Meets budgetary objectives and adjust project constraints based on financial analysis * Develops comprehensive project plans * Coordinates and tracks workflow and meeting schedules and projects of limited scope to ensure work is complete/appropriate, and follow-up is completed in a timely fashion
  • Communication * Demonstrates effectiveness in facilitating trainings and presenting * Responsible for using sound judgment when complications arise outside the scope of authority, such as the need for deadline augmentation, and bringing these to the attention of the appropriate manager in a timely manner * Promotes authentic and diplomatic communication necessary for the implementation of program/project objectives * Demonstrates effectiveness in clearly communicating complex problems, recommended actions, and intervention statuses
  • Administrative * Assists with the coordination of the department's participation in professional development conferences * Responsible for coordinating schedules, including arranging meetings and appointments for Program/Project operations and events * Responsible for composition, typing, proofing and appropriately disseminating a variety of materials, e.g., correspondence, memos, reports, etc., pertinent to the functions of the Loss Control and Prevention team, as directed
  • Performs other duties as assigned


Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • One year MHA Residency completed at Keck Medicine of USC may be substituted for one year work experience
  • 2-3 years Healthcare setting experience in risk management, quality, performance improvement, safety, health education, or other related healthcare position.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact professionally with culturally and professionally diverse individuals
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Demonstrated ability to handle confidential material with discretion
  • Moderate knowledge of Microsoft Office Programs: PowerPoint, Visio, Word, Excel, Outlook

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree Public Health, Health Administration, Risk Management, Business Administration, Project Management, or Education related field
  • 2 years or more Providing education/training in a healthcare setting
  • Demonstrated ability to provide administrative reports and analyses of overall efficiency and effectiveness of initiatives
  • Moderate knowledge of SharePoint, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator
  • Experience implementing and maintaining large educational initiatives in a healthcare setting (e.g., TeamSTEPPS)
  • Specialty Certification Just Culture Master Certification
  • Specialty Certification TeamSTEPPS Master Trainer
  • Certified Risk Manager Certified Professional Healthcare Risk Manager (CPHRM)
  • Project Management Professional (PMP)

Required Licenses/Certifications:

  • Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) If no card upon hire, one must be obtained within 30 days of hire and maintained by renewal before expiration date. (Required within LA City only)

The annual base salary range for this position is $68,640.00 - $112,370.00. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state, and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.
