Job Summary

The Pathologists' Assistant works closely with the Department of Pathology to perform a variety of laboratory procedures related to collection, transporting and processing of human biospecimens for research including but not limited to tissue, blood and urine. Tissue collection often requires dissection of surgical specimens according to strict protocols that require highly detailed annotation to ensure that research sampling does not negatively impact clinical evaluation. The Pathologists' Assistant is responsible for entering collection, processing and distribution annotations in the BSPL electronic database.

Department Description

The Clinical & Translational Science Institute (CTSI) facilitates clinical and translational research to improve patient and community health. We do this by providing infrastructure, services and training to enable research to be conducted more efficiently, effectively and in new ways. To advance our mission, we develop broad coalitions and partnerships at the local, regional and national levels to enable a transformation of the research environment.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in medical technology, laboratory science, chemical physical or biological science (CLIA HCT compliant) and a minimum of three years of recent, directly related work experience following degree completion, utilizing the technicques or methods rewuire by the positon - OR- an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Completion of a 2-year Pathologists' Assistant program (NAACLS accredited). A graduate from a National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences ( NAACLS) accredited pathologists' assist traning program or equivalent.
  • Thorough knowledge of gross room operations and specimen handling / processing techniques
  • Knowledge of pathology and relevant medical center, and UC policies and processes. Knowledge of relevant pathology federal, state and local laws
  • Productive in specimen dissection quantity, quality and consistency
  • Organizational skills and acute attention to detail. Ability to follow strict protocols without deviation
  • Thorough knowledge of data management and documentation methods used in pathology
  • Strong skills to evaluate issues and identify solutions within defined procedures and policies. Proven ability to address problems and suggest solutions through critical thinking process
  • Verbal and written communication skills to explain clinical concepts
  • Knowledge of basic human anatomy
  • Minimum 1 year laboratory experience in research and/ or clinical setting
  • Flexibility to orient and work in all UCSF Medical Center locations as needed
  • Ability to organize and prioritize responsibilities and perform well under pressure to meet deadlines
  • Excellent data entry, word processing, spelling, grammar, and editing skills
  • Ability to assist with operational oversight of BSPL acquisition operations

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to perform relevant software. Knowledge of organization's pathology application programs to enter documentation accurately and maintain databases
  • Skilled in use of microtome or cryostat
  • Demonstrated proficiency in teaching, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Experience in tissue acquisition and handling for pathology and biorepositories
  • Previous leadership experience in a hospital laboratory and biorepository
  • Experience working in the Pathology Department of an academic health center
  • Expertise in standards required for accreditation programs established by the College of American Pathologists ( CAP)

License/Certification

  • Current ASCP Board certification. Must be maintained as long as one works in this position.
