We're actively seeking a Derivative Operations Manager to join our Investment Operations Team in Newport Beach, CA. This role can be on-site or hybrid.

As a Derivative Operations Manager, you'll play a key role in Pacific Life's growth and long-term success by providing derivative operational support to Pacific Life Investment Division with a strong focus in regulatory compliance and process scalability and efficiency. You will fill a new role that sits on a team of 5 people in the Corporate division. Your colleagues will include other investment operation teams such as Collateral Management, Fixed Income, Reconciliation, and Strategic Planning Solutions Team.

How you will make an impact:

  • Oversee operational activities for derivatives in various systems, including derivative system and accounting system
  • Lead and develop a team of analysts
  • Develop and maintain a detailed understanding of Pacific Life Investments capabilities and structures
  • Create and maintain controls along with books and records in compliance with regulatory requirements
  • Provide front office support for trading and portfolio management
  • Develop and cultivate relationships with key stakeholders
  • Serve as escalation point for operational queries
  • Engage with business vendors, exchanges, and execution venues, understanding their platform enhancements to enhance capabilities and efficiencies
  • Provide input regarding the future direction and long-term strategy to support derivative activities
  • Coordinate and validate software functionality including recommendations for improvement
  • Identify, prioritize and drive system and process enhancements impacting Pacific Life systems and workflows
  • Represent Investment Operations on internal working groups and cross-functional initiatives in support of delivering key business objectives
  • Continuously emphasize process improvement, making recommendations that enhance the value, efficiencies and automation of Global Investments Operations
  • Lead the advancement of operational reports, KRIs, KPIs and processes
  • Ensure all processes and applications are sound, minimizing errors and workload

    The Experience you will bring:

    • Bachelors Degree in Finance, Economics or Accounting, or equivalent work experience
    • 5-7+ years of relevant experience in a financial services organization, especially insurance
    • Experience with Calypso, PAM, Markit, TriOptima, SAP Business Objects, AcadiaSoft and Bloomberg Products preferred
    • Experience with PowerBI, PowerQuery and Python could also be a differentiator
    • Experience establishing and managing a tight control environment
    • Strong collaborative approach with experience coordinating between functional areas of the organization, especially trading, portfolio management, legal, accounting and treasury.
    • Experience leading and managing teams of senior analysts, creating/maintaining a culture and a problem-solving mindset to provide operational solutions for new strategies.
    • Thorough understanding and strong knowledge of listed futures, cleared OTC and bilateral OTC products along with operational workflows and processes
      • Futures
      • OTC Options including call spread and other more complex, multi-leg varieties, Rainbow options and Cliquets
      • Equity Total Return Swaps
      • Swaptions
      • Bond Forwards
      • Interest Rate Swaps - Cleared & Bilateral
      • Cross Currency Swaps
    • Knowledge of trading and support processes along with functional understanding of downstream accounting functions, including hedge accounting knowledge

    • Clear and concise written and verbal communication skills for dealing with various parties and in leading staff
    • Skill and experience operating from a control mindset - considering process effectiveness and risk, ensuring that protocols and compliance are considered and that appropriate operational, financial reporting and economic risks are addressed.
    • Strong attention to detail and decision making skills
    • Firm knowledge of the business models of insurance companies including the regulatory and accounting constraints under which they operate
    • Familiarity with GAAP/STAT/IFRS and accounting policies as it relates to investments

    Base Pay Range:

    The base pay range noted represents the company's good faith minimum and maximum range for this role at the time of posting. The actual compensation offered to a candidate will be dependent upon several factors, including but not limited to experience, qualifications and geographic location. Also, most employees are eligible for additional incentive pay.

    $131,040.00 - $160,160.00
