Job Description

We have an opening for a faculty member to engage in a collaborative research and work-study assignment of mutual interest to further their teaching or research goals. You will actively participate in: Bayesian characterization and experimental design, mathematical analysis of low-regularity optimization problems under uncertainty (e.g., expectation constraints, risk measures, problems governed by partial differential equations (PDEs) with state constraints and/or equilibrium constraints) and scalable numerical algorithms for such problems, or multiscale time-stepping methods for PDEs as well as scalable numerical algorithms for such problems. This position is in the Center for Applied Scientific Computer within the Computing Directorate

In this role, you will

- Perform advanced research in at least one of the following areas: in Bayesian characterization and experimental design, optimization under uncertainty with non-differentiable risk objectives and expectation constraints, analysis of PDE-constrained optimization with state and equilibrium constraints, or scalable second-order optimization methods for problems in function spaces.

- Independently determine research objectives and criteria to satisfy project achievements and execute the appropriate technical approaches.

- Collaborate with technical area leaders, project leaders, and program management to enable the transfer of the theoretical developments in the application areas and identify and document potential roadblocks in this transfer.

- Gather and analyze the data in support of scientific research.

- Participate in research planning and evaluation discussions.
- Participate in activities as appropriate to provide exposure to the Laboratory Scholar Engagement and Education Plan (SEEP).

- Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

- Ph.D. degree in mathematics or a related field or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.

- Must be a continuing faculty at an accredited institution.

- Experience with scientific computing.

- Advanced knowledge of the theory of equilibrium/complementarity systems and associated numerical algorithms for the simulation of such systems.

- Significant experience conducting research in optimization under uncertainty.

- Significant experience with mathematical modeling of differential systems and optimization problems with equilibrium constraints.

- Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information.

- Experience working with personal computers and familiarity with Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
