Waterborne Security Boat Instructors shall possess the following documented skills, and experience, as well as the specific requirements outlined below. These include, but are not limited to the following:


Duties & Responsibilities:

  • All instructors must be familiar with all presentation, delivery method, testing and remediation procedures, curriculum, training aids, devices, electronic podiums, and equipment operation and maintenance procedures associated with the course or section of the course they will instruct.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs):

  • Knowledge of basic and advanced training techniques to include classroom management, Classroom Assessment Techniques (CATs), and student motivation.
  • Knowledge of computer technology application as it applies to instructional presentation and the use of classroom training aids.
  • Possess high personal standards of technical knowledge and professional competence in delivering training material.
  • Possess the ability to perform in a military environment.
  • Possess a familiarity with the organization and hierarchy of the U. S. navy, military rank/grade structure.
  • Possess a knowledge of Navy and military terminology.
  • Possess above average communication skills and the ability to comprehend both verbal and written instructions.
  • Possess the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities to complete CUIT certification and deliver each phase and topic assigned.

Minimum Requirements

  • Must have 2 years of experience as an instructor delivering training,
  • Must have 3 years documented tactical and leadership experience in a Maritime Environment, proficient in the operation, maintenance (routine operational maintenance associated with pre-, post, and underway operational checks), employment of Navy Force Protection boats, and be proficient in the following areas:
    • Coxswain Skills
    • Launch and recovery of craft
    • Maneuvering in open water and confined spaces
    • Underway alongside operations (VBSS boarding) with other vessels up to and including large ocean going vessels
    • High speed maneuvering in tactical environment o Towing of downed craft in open water and restricted water environments
    • Operation of both water jet and propeller driven craft
  • Attended the Navy Instructor Training Course (NITC) (A-012-0077) (or military service equivalent), or Academic credentialing (teacher/professor), or Instructor training via an academic institution.
  • Academic Instructor Training Course (ITC) requirements should contain at a minimum, these Learning Objectives:
    • Effective communication and questioning techniques
    • Adult learning theory and principles
    • Instructional Delivery methods
    • Lesson delivery performance laboratory
    • Training environment management
    • Interpersonal skills
    • Evaluation and Feedback
  • Must have 3 years documented operational security boat experience serving in one or more of the following:
    • U.S. Navy Special Warfare Combatant Crewman (SWCC);
    • USCG Deployable Specialized Forces (DSF):
    • Maritime Security Response Team (MSRT)
    • Maritime Safety & Security Team (MSST)
    • Port Security Unit (PSU)
    • USMC Small Craft Company;
    • U.S. Navy Coastal Riverine Forces (CRF) Detachment or Training and Evaluation Unit (TEU);
    • USCG Shore-Based Boat Unit or Maritime Patrol Forces that employ these types of craft:
    • Patrol Boats (WPB)
    • Coastal Patrol Boats (CPB)
    • U.S. Custom and Border Protection (CBP); Marine Interdiction
  • Possess or be able to qualify as a Second Class Swimmer in accordance with NETC P1552/16 (Navy Swimming and Water Survival Instructors Manual) (Attachment AA).
  • Possess or be able to obtain a USCG National Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessel (OUPV) of Less Than 100 GRT Near Coastal Waters endorsement or better within one year of reporting. Specific requirements are available at USCG's National Maritime Center website: (/)
  • Must have normal color vision (FALANT color vision test and no night blindness.
  • Possess the proficiency and skill sets to safely plan and deliver group-paced instruction on security boat tactics, techniques, and procedures in both a classroom setting and during underway training evolutions utilizing Safety/Operational Risk Management, Classroom Teaching Fundamentals, Training Requirements and Training Plans, and Training Scenario Scripting.
  • Proficiency in maritime navigation to include:
  • Solid understanding of maritime navigation to include aids to navigation, rules of the road and plotting geographic coordinates on nautical charts
    • Nautical chart reading
    • Navigate by dead reckoning
    • Navigate using coastal piloting
    • Navigate using onboard navigational equipment
    • Navigate craft at night
  • Have an in-depth understanding of tactical small boat operations to include:
    • Organizing a boat team
    • Prepare craft for operations
    • Maneuver multiple craft in various formations
    • Conduct patrols (day / night)
    • Support MIO Operations
    • Live fire operations from Navy small craft during day and night.
    • Escort Operations
    • Perform risk assessments utilizing the ORM process
  • Craft Systems and Sub-Systems
    • Operation and Maintenance of Craft installed Electronic Navigation systems.
    • Operation and Maintenance of hand held, and installed boat, communication equipment and operating systems (water jet and propeller)
  • Have experience with logistical movement of small craft and associated gear
  • Prepare craft/gear for over the road transits via prime mover & boat trailer
  • Prepare a craft/gear for hoisting operations.
  • Possess tactical operations planning experience using a military decision-making process; organizational and individual planning; patrol coordination; development and issuance of a concept of operations, warning, and patrol; and mission debriefing
  • Possess experience in night operations, low-visibility operations, long-range navigation and operating small boats using Visual Augmentation Systems (VAS) or night vision devices.

Minimum Education:

  • GED/HS Diploma
