Your tasks

Job Purpose

The Registered Professional Forester (RPF) will be a project manager within our Timberland Management Group. The position includes leading projects such as THP/timber sale preparation and administration, rural development projects, timber inventories and appraisals, cost share and grant application and administration, and vegetative fuels reduction projects. The position will also work at the direction of other foresters to support existing projects. Additionally, the RPF will assist our Forest Carbon Verification Group with carbon offset project verifications under the CA Air Resources Board Compliance Offset Protocol and other voluntary protocols. In summary, the position will be tasked with participating in a wide range of aspects within the professional practice of forestry. Additionally, the position includes training and mentoring supervised designees in the practice of forestry in order to grow capacity within the Company. The position will be based in Grass Valley, CA or Quincy, CA, but extended travel is required and may include camping.

Duties and Responsibilities

Preparation of timber harvest permits, timber sales and other forest management operations, and cost share applications, including field and document preparation. This position prepares and signs these and other such permits and plans as the responsible RPF.

Project management, including directing other team staff (Associate Foresters, Forestry Technicians, GIS Analyst, etc) to accomplish project work. Prepares, tracks, and administers budgets, schedules, and operational quality control.

Documents and records the technical information related to each Harvest Plan in a concise and accurate manner.

Provides informational documentation and explanation of details of field layout.

Maintains legible, accurate, detailed records and writes technical reports.

Updates Company and client databases with a high level of accuracy.

Produces accurate, comprehensive, and clear maps using GIS mapping programs.

Performs routine maintenance on the Company's equipment.

Provides professional oversight of contractors performing tree planting, herbicide application, fuel reduction, timber harvesting, and road and watercourse crossing restoration projects.

Assists other Foresters with Harvesting Plan preparation and road layout as directed.

Timber cruise design, measurement and inventory reporting.

Administration of logging contracts and timber operations as the RPF of Record

May be designated lead for approving outside contracts in performing forest management activities on client land. Ensures the timely performance, quality of performance, and cost of outside contract work on behalf of clients. Must be knowledgeable of current cost of supplies, equipment, and labor rates. The position may develop outside contacts with suppliers and contractors to assure reliability, quality, and economy of services provided to the Company. The RPF is required to uphold their fiduciary responsibilities to the client per CA State law.

Carbon inventory and analysis for project verifications throughout the country in the capacity of "Professional Forester" as defined in the ARB Compliance Offset Protocols

Effectively and professionally represent the Company and its clients. Builds and maintains effective and professional relationships with co-workers, clients, contractors, and with other key contacts outside the company. Develops and maintains good working relationships with Federal/State agencies, local officials, private organizations and research cooperatives. Build a network of such contacts to support project work.

Remains current on technical and regulatory issues relating to forest management through active membership and participation in key cooperatives and/or industry groups.

Assures a safe workplace. Takes personal initiative and an aggressive responsibility to ensure ongoing safe behaviors through implementation and active participation in the company safety program with a goal of no recordable accidents. Develops, implements, and facilitates safety elements to support the Company's Injury and Illness Prevention Plan and participates actively in Company safety program.

Must be committed to maintaining the confidentiality of all of employer clients, fellow employees and project data and information.

Provide professional oversight of Associate Foresters and Forestry Technicians

Set goals for performance and deadlines in ways that comply with company's plans and vision.

Organize workflow and ensure that employees understand their duties or delegated tasks.

Monitor employee productivity and providing constructive feedback and coaching when necessary.

Prepare and submit performance reports.

Make recommendations in regards to promotions and performance to Supervisor.

Help to hire and train new employees.

Ensure adherence to legal and company policies and procedures and undertake disciplinary actions if the need arises.

Regularly exercises discretionary decisions in the performance of his/her duties.

Working Conditions

Ability to lift 50 lbs and carry the load in a pack or vest

Do repetitive tasks with few breaks

Work in adverse weather conditions including but not limited to high heat, rain, snow, and cold temperatures

Walk, hike, or stand for extended periods of time with others and alone in steep, rugged, and/or remote terrain under adverse weather conditions

Ability to sit for extended periods of time

Works in conditions that may expose employee to fire, wildlife encounters, reptile and/or insect bites.

Mandatory travel to remote project locations.

Ability to tour logging operations, attend trainings, and company functions.

Must maintain punctual and regular attendance and present appropriate professional appearance at all times.

Requires the use of standard safety equipment in compliance with Company Safety Policies.

This position may be exposed to pollen, dust, smoke and pesticides.

Your qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

B.S./B.A. in Forestry or closely related field

Applicant must possess California RPF license

Working knowledge of CA Forest Practice Rules

Knowledge of how to apply road and harvesting design principles during field layout.

Must be proficient in the use of forestry equipment, including GPS.

Previous supervisory experience required

Organizational and leadership skills

Valid California driver's license and clear driving record

Ability to navigate terrain with GPS or map and compass

Competency with Microsoft Office programs and ArcGIS

Desired Qualifications

Experience writing THPs from start to approval as the responsible RPF

Experience and proficiency with ArcGIS Online and associated apps

Education or experience with rare plant or wildlife surveys

Experience with administration of timber harvesting and other related forest management operations

Experience with forest inventory to a high-degree of accuracy (such as carbon cruising or FIA inventory)
