Mechanics Bank is currently searching for aDirector of Enterprise and Operational risk Management to join our team. Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) and Operational Risk Management (ORM) play a critical role in Mechanics Bank (Bank) three lines of defense, providing oversight of the Bank's ERM Framework and business operations. The Director of E&ORM performs a wide range of services including risk assessments, controls monitoring and testing, and governance. Oversees and directs the ERM and ORM programs within the Bank. Fosters a culture of Risk awareness, corporate governance, and increased business integrity, with the objective of embedding ERM and ORM into Bank processes. Ensures the adequacy of the annual Risk Control Self-Assessment program. Leads both enterprise and operational risk management projects including the implementation of a controlled environment. Responsible for continuous enhancement of "In-Control" processes. Drives change and influences decision making across the organization in the area of ERM and ORM. Assists business owners and internal auditors with updating/resolving outstanding audit issues.

What you will be doing:

  • Directly supervises employees while overseeing assigned function(s). Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the Bank's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; managing and appraising performance; coaching and development; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

  • Leads the development and maintenance of the enterprise and operational risk management policies, procedures, and reporting according to the ERM Framework and related ERM deliverables, including Operational Loss Analysis, KPI development and monitoring, as well as "dashboard" type reports to Bank Management and relevant Committees.

  • Serves as the primary point of contact with business unit management regarding risk documentation, evaluation and management control processes, as assigned. Includes facilitating with the business lines the gathering and analysis of enterprise-wide and operational loss data, completion of process flows and risk and control self-assessments, development of key risk indicators, and documentation and evaluation of enterprise-wide and operational risk profile and risk management control processes.

  • Assists the Chief Risk Officer, Board of Directors and senior management with establishing and communicating the Bank's Enterprise and Operational Risk Management Frameworks risk objectives, developing and communicating ERM and ORM risk management policies, and the Bank's overall Risk Appetite.

  • Analyzes current environments / incidents so as to identify gaps in control assessments and proactively oversee process improvements. Interprets non-routine guidelines to various complex work unit activities and challenges underlying assumptions when appropriate to improve methods and processes and generate cost savings.

  • Oversees periodic risk reporting to Operating Committee, Enterprise Risk Committee and the Board Risk Committee, as appropriate.

  • Oversees the implementation and maintenance of enterprise-wide and operational risk tools; supports project activities for key department initiatives. Integrates ERM and ORM with the Bank's strategic and business continuity plans.

  • Review and challenge business processes and analyze enterprise-wide and operational risk data to identify areas of increased risk at the Bank.

  • Identify opportunities to streamline risk assessment processes to increase operational efficiency and operational risk effectiveness.

  • Work collaboratively with key stakeholders in the business to inform on enterprise-wide and operational risk issues, events, and risk acceptance decisions. Partners with senior leaders to understand enterprise-wide and operational risk drivers to identify trends and mitigation opportunities.

  • Promote sound risk management practices and culture to strengthen the overall enterprise and operational risk environment.

  • Assist in the design, collection, tracking and reporting of key enterprise-wide and operational risk metrics for senior leadership, the Enterprise Risk Committee and the Board Risk Committee. Leads structured senior leadership and Board discussions to analyze enterprise-wide and operational risks, the potential consequences if appropriate actions aren't taken, and provides recommendations to mitigate material risks.

  • Facilitate emerging enterprise-wide and operational risk identification and assessment activities, and related strategic initiatives. Stays abreast of enterprise-wide and operational risk management industry trends by leading and/or attending seminars, training sessions, and workshops, as necessary to develop and ensure ongoing success of the ERM and ORM risk programs.

Who you are:

  • Bachelor's Degree preferred, additional experience may be considered in lieu of degree.

  • Minimum of 10 years of technical expertise in enterprise risk and operational risk required. 5 years of leadership required.

  • Must have knowledge of Enterprise Risk Management, Operational Risk Management, Basel II, Sarbanes-Oxley Act and FDIC/FDICIA/OCC regulatory requirements related to risk as well as knowledge of data warehouse or other reporting applications.

  • Combination of experience of the following Bank's Risk Appetite Statement and its twelve risk categories: credit, liquidity, capital, market, model, operational, compliance, HR, data & technology, legal, reputation, & strategic.

  • Must have knowledge of principles and practices of accounting and financial analysis, including internal control and risk management concepts; financial services industry practices and regulatory requirements, including lending, deposit, treasury and support operations.

  • Display resourcefulness, cooperation, commitment and dependability. Readily accept responsibility and show interest in and active involvement in producing new ideas. Demonstrate insight about which ideas will be most effective.

  • Adapt and respond well to change in job duties, staff, peers, policies and procedures.

  • Analyze enterprise-wide data for holistic, systemic and thematic trends in order to assist senior leadership with decision-making and process improvement initiatives; proficient in metrics/KRIs assessment and reporting.

  • Proficient with MS Office suite.

  • 25% of travel

Salary: $190,000-230,000 annually

Final compensation package will be determined by the work experience, education, and/or skill level of the applicant along with internal equity and alignment with geographic market data.
