Job Summary

Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) and guided by the policies and procedures of Ambulatory Services, the Licensed Vocational Nurse works in collaboration with the clinical team in delivering high-quality care to patients in the Allergy and Immunology Clinic. The type of patients treated in the clinic include patients who are receiving allergy immunotherapy services.

The Licensed Vocational Nurse is responsible for providing nursing care to patients in the ambulatory setting. All components of nursing care will be individualized to meet the patient's physiological and psychosocial developmental level and needs. Functions as a member of the interdisciplinary and nursing teams; carries out established nursing procedures and performs related duties as required by patient need. Works collaboratively with RN as a nursing resource for staff and provides nursing supervision that is within the scope of practice in the absence of the RN. The LVN triages patient phone calls and messages, directing assessment need calls to RN or MD. The Licensed Vocational Nurse supports the clinical team that consists of physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, social workers, medical assistants, and program coordinators.

Department Description


The Allergy and Immunologic (AI) Clinic evaluates and treats patients with a variety of allergic conditions which include: asthma, allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, rashes, food allergy, drug hypersensitivity, and bee sting allergy.

AI also cares for patients with:
immune deficiencies, frequent infections, and inflammatory diseases of other types. Complete skin testing and injection therapy for allergies are available.

Required Qualifications

This position requires flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations.
  • Graduated from an accredited vocational nursing program with a certificate.
  • 6 - 12 months minimum experience in an ambulatory setting.
  • Recent experience in an Allergy or Immunology clinic.
  • Familiarity with the process of prior authorizations to obtain specialty medications.
  • Must have worked in a medical team consisting of several providers and an administrative assistant, knowing in-basket management, assisting with medication refills, coordinating services, and scheduling appointments and procedures
  • Strong computer skills and use of Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to prioritize work efficiently and independently, demonstrating strong self-initiative
  • Excellent communication with patients and all levels of personnel with excellent writing skills.
  • Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to use electronic medical records.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with allergy procedures including skin prick testing and allergy immunotherapy injections
  • Experience with telephone triage.

License/Certification

  • Active Licensed Vocational Nurse licensure in the State of California
  • Active American Heart Association CPR Certification
  • BLS Certification
