SPECIAL NOTICE REGARDING THE WORK LOCATION OF THIS POSITION-Although WestEd provides the option of working at one of its facilities for employees, many roles allow employees to choose to work remotely for their own convenience. Content Area or Department Brief Description:

The Justice and Prevention Area works collaboratively with a variety of government, foundation, community-based and other partners to conduct research, evaluation, and policy analysis and to provide technical assistance that informs efforts to prevent crime and violence, increase safety for individuals, schools, and communities, improve juvenile and adult justice systems including issues of fairness and equity, and further public health by preventing substance abuse and other high-risk behaviors.

Position Overview:

This position provides a wonderful opportunity to be part of a team with a commitment to making positive contributions to practice and policy. Specifically, this candidate will support implementation of various best practices and evidence-based school safety strategies and programs alongside local, regional, and state educational systems.

What We're Looking For:

  • At least a Master's Degree in criminal justice or social science field (e.g., psychology, sociology, public health)
  • At least 5 years of experience in school safety related technical assistance projects, including substantial interaction with clients and recipients of services
  • Extensive knowledge of the school safety field and technical assistance needs at local and state levels
  • Experience with behavioral threat assessment training and technical assistance and/or experience conducting behavioral threat assessments
  • Experience with school-based emergency management
    • IAEM Certified Emergency Manager preferred
  • Experience with physical school safety, including security audits
    • ASIS Certified Protection Professional or Physical Security Professional, or equivalent, preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to create tools/resources to assist technical assistance provision and to disseminate best practices through writing and presenting
  • Willingness to provide hands-on training and technical assistance
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team and to treat staff and clients respectfully
  • Ability to work across multiple projects and manage multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Strong critical and strategic thinking skills, with an ability to creatively solve problems, identify opportunities, and generate next steps
  • Experience in grant writing is preferred
  • Ability to travel
  • Must be authorized to work in the US (visa sponsorship not available)

Responsibilities:

  • Work alongside education system partners, and their respective stakeholders, to create and align a comprehensive approach to school safety aimed at preventing school violence and promoting positive school climate
  • Organize and facilitate internal and external partner and stakeholder meetings to coordinate information sharing and input in support of a comprehensive approach to school safety
  • Consult evidence-based school safety resources and experts in the field to effectively address the complexities of implementing evidence-based school safety initiatives
  • Develop and employ various data collection efforts to ensure relevant data are available, including school and community stakeholder input, to make appropriate implementation and policy decisions related to evidence-based school safety initiatives
  • Develop data-driven implementation plans for various school safety initiatives
  • Develop resources to support implementation of evidence-based school safety initiatives, such as communication content, policies, procedure manuals, training materials, short informational videos, etc.
  • Organize and facilitate training sessions
  • Provide ongoing coaching and technical assistance to partners
  • Throughout the implementation of evidence-based school safety initiatives, continuously review data collected and coach partners on necessary adjustments to ensure successful outcomes (e.g., reduction of violence, improvement in equitable practices)
  • Help build new work by contributing to and/or reviewing federal government and other proposals
  • Actively contribute to the dissemination of work through presentations, briefs, and other mechanisms
  • Actively contribute to a healthy culture and climate within the Justice and Prevention Area and in the larger WestEd community

WestEd conducts a criminal background check and education verification for all new hires. Any offers of employment will be contingent on receiving a clear background check in accordance with applicable law.

SALARY AND BENEFITS:

The full salary range for this position, WestEd level 10, is $78,800 to $135,000, but WestEd does not typically hire at or near the top of the salary range. The typical hiring range for this role is $78,800 to $112,500. The actual offer takes into account multiple factors, including but not limited to education, experience, internal equity, and other organizational needs.

In addition to the base salary, benefits include:

* 15% contribution toward retirement effective day 1 of employment
