Pay Range

$132,810 - $170,556 Annually for the SES.2level

$159,330 - $ 204,636 Annually for the SES.3level

Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.


Job Description

In this role you will

  • Conduct moderate to complex research and development related to the processing of metals and alloys, including actinide materials.
  • Model and perform simulations of multi-phase casting operations.
  • Participate in casting operations to fabricate complex experimental components.
  • Perform laser-welding and laser powder-bed fusion experiments on a variety of metal alloys using unique laser properties.
  • Characterize cast and additively manufactured materials across multiple length scales and interpret how those results influence material behavior and performance.
  • Prepare written analyses, verbal briefings, and other products that capture and communicate results.
  • Maintain and establish laboratory protocols, including adherence to safety and security protocols.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Master's degree in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Metallurgy, Nuclear Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, or a related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of two or more of the following: materials science, solidification, phase transformations, fluid dynamics, and heat transfer.
  • Experience with materials characterization methods for structural materials (i.e., X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, and/or optical microscopy).
  • Experience with elemental analysis of metallic samples (i.e., mass spectrometry, energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry).
  • Ability to work independently, as well as a member of a team.
  • Experience operating computers to collect, analyze, and document scientific results.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to interact with a diverse set of scientists, engineers, and other technical and administrative staff within a collaborative research and development environment.

Additional qualifications at the SES.3 level

  • PhD in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Metallurgy, Nuclear Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, or a related field.
  • Experience modeling processes involving fluid dynamics , heat transfer, and electromagnetic interactions using software such as ANSYS, COMSOL, Flow3D, ProCAST, etc.
  • Experience with process controls and software such as LabView or Factory Talk, along with data analysis using MATLAB, Python, etc.
  • Experience related to foundry and/or metals heat treatment operations.

Qualifications we desire

  • Experience related to the operation of laser-based metal additive manufacturing equipment.
  • Experience troubleshooting and maintaining instruments.
  • Experience working in gloveboxes. Experience handling radioactive, pyrophoric, or other hazardous materials.
