Description

We are currently accepting applications to fill two (2) Extra-Help Engineering Technician I/II positions, one (1) in Santa Barbara and (1) in Santa Maria for the Transportation Division of the Public Works Department.

NOTE: **Civil Service Rule (CSR) 905 Extra-Help Appointments. An extra-help appointment is defined as an appointment made to a non-regular, non-permanent position established on a temporary basis to meet peak loads, unusual work situations, seasonal and recurrent work, intermittent assignments, or emergencies.

THE POSITION: Under close supervision, trains to perform or performs paraprofessional civil engineering work in design, traffic, survey, materials testing, hydrology, permits, construction inspection, or other civil engineering specialties; performs related duties as required.

Examples of Duties

  1. Prepares simple maps, records, graphs, and drawings or provides details on more complex ones.
  2. Conducts or assists with routine traffic control activities such as speed surveys, inventory/inspection of traffic control devices, and road striping.
  3. Makes measurements, cuts brush, sets stakes, assists with setting monuments, and makes simple survey or construction notes or reports as a member of a field survey crew.
  4. Performs simple drafting and engineering office work; operates a computer using a variety of software, including CAD, database management, and spreadsheet programs.
  5. Prepares survey maps and sketches from field notes, maps, and records; prepares plans, profiles, and cross-sections, using CAD software; prepares change orders and as-built plans; prepares plans and specifications for traffic signal installations and modifications.
  6. Checks a variety of plans, such as improvement drawings and drainage plans, to ensure compliance with legal requirements; inspects construction work, such as grading and compaction, to ensure conformance with design plans and specifications; checks and enforces development conditions of plans; inspects batch plans to ensure that materials meet standard legal specifications.
  7. Performs routine field and laboratory materials control tests or inspection of construction methods and materials; collects field samples of soils and construction materials and performs a wide variety of tests to determine acceptability of materials; collects and analyzes rainfall data; operates survey instruments, such as levels, transits, and theodolites, to determine the location of boundaries, easements, improvements, structures, and topographic features.
  8. Discusses maps, plans, and costs with property owners, engineers, contractors, and other government representatives; coordinates construction activities with property owners, utility companies, contractors, other government representatives, and the general public; presents engineering data, such as traffic data and flood hazard data, at public meetings.
Employment Standards

  1. Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent including coursework in algebra, geometry, and trigonometry; OR,
  2. A combination of training, education, and experience that is equivalent to the employment standard listed above and that provides the required knowledge and abilities.
Additional Qualifications: Possession of a valid California Driver License may be required for some positions.

Knowledge of: mathematics, including: algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.

Ability to: learn surveying, drafting, testing and inspection principles and procedures; perform assigned work; make arithmetical computations; prepare accurate and neat calculations and drawings; follow oral and written instructions; learn to input, access, and analyze data using a personal computer terminal; prepare and maintain accurate records; work effectively with the public, other government agencies, contractors, and staff; perform manual tasks under a variety of conditions; and establish and maintain effective relationships with others.

Desirable Qualifications: some knowledge of engineering technology, drafting, and/or CADbe required for some positions.
Supplemental Information

The ability to perform physical tasks of moderate difficulty may be required for some positions in this class.
