Position Summary:
UCI MIND is an Organized Research Unit focusing on basic and clinical research in the fields of brain aging and cognitive disorders. Our mission is to discover means to improve the lives of people with Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia. UCI MIND is committed to community education with the goals of keeping the community informed of our progress, sharing learnings that can help community members reduce their risk for dementia.
Under the general supervision of the Managing Director, the successful applicant will be responsible for husbandry, breeding, biopsy, data recording of Alzheimer's Disease and other genetic mouse models within the UC Irvine Transgenic Mouse Facility (TMF). Additional duties as the Colony Manager involve performing laboratory procedures and analysis, including but not limited to, extraction of DNA from biopsies of genetically modified mice and molecular analysis of genetic changes in the genomes.

The expected pay range for this recruitment is $25.64 - $25.64 (Hourly Rate). The Full Salary Range for the salary grade this position is assigned to is $25.64 - $30.59 (Hourly Rate).

Required:
  • Bachelor's degree in biology, reproductive physiology, genetics, molecular biology or other closely related field, or minimum of 2 years work experience managing a genetically modified mouse colony in a research laboratory setting

  • Ability to participate in shared project management workflow (via Teams, Slack, Trello, etc.)
  • Excellent time-management and record-keeping skills
  • Strong work ethic Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to see projects through to completion
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience in conventional PCR and qPCR genotyping


Preferred:
  • Knowledge of basic mouse genetics and transgenic line development workflow
  • Knowledge of basic CRISPR Cas9 technology
  • Experience in mouse colony management software
  • Experience in designing PCR protocols


Special Conditions Required:
  • Early morning shift required: 6:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.
  • May be required to work on weekends as needed.
  • Must wear protective clothing (PPE) provided.
  • Constant exposure to possible allergens in the animal rooms, including (but not limited to) animal waste from dirty cages, dirty bedding, animal hair and dander and dust.
  • The work area is enclosed with no direct access to open air.
