Detailed Description:

Brown and Caldwell is seeking a laboratory analytical chemist to join our Treatability Laboratory. The ideal candidate should possess strong verbal and written communication skills, be highly organized, responsive, and capable of working in a diverse team environment while handling multiple tasks with competing priorities.

  • Perform routine maintenance, calibration, and upkeep of analytical instruments, including field equipment.
  • Support the laboratory manager and/or lead chemist/engineers in standard laboratory tasks, including monthly health and safety audits, and tracking of chemical and equipment inventory.
  • Lead and implement laboratory analytical and treatability testing following test plans, standard operating procedures (SOPs), as well as health and safety and waste management protocols.
  • Collaborate with vendors of various technologies to develop analytical methods for analytical equipment.
  • Assist project teams in the development and preparation of technical documents, including proposals, test plans, feasibility studies, technical memorandums, health and safety assessment forms, budgetary cost estimates, and O&M manuals.
  • Analyze environmental samples using sophisticated instrumentation, requiring comprehensive knowledge in Ion Chromatography, Spectrophotometry, Mass Spectrometry, and Wet Chemistry.

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • Educational Background: Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Environmental Sciences, or a closely related field. A degree in Analytical Chemistry is highly preferred.
  • Experience: At least three years of full-time professional experience as a Chemist in an environmental or water/wastewater analysis laboratory.
  • Analytical Skills: Foundational knowledge of analytical techniques and the use and care of instruments.
  • LIMS Experience: Previous experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) or other sample/analysis tracking systems is preferred.
  • Instrument Familiarity: Proficiency with analytical instruments used for separation, identification, and quantification of components in samples. This includes High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Ion Chromatography (IC), Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS), Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), Ultraviolet-Visible Spectroscopy (UV-Vis), Fluorescence Excitation-Emission Matrix (fEEM), and Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) spectroscopy.
  • Technical Skills: Strong technical skills with the ability to articulate ideas and concepts visually and contextually.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to work well independently and in team environments.
  • Travel: Willingness and ability to travel up to 10% of the time.
  • Physical Requirements: Must be willing to work in the laboratory potentially for extended periods of time, and able to perform physically demanding work. This includes flexibility to work extended hours and weekends as needed on treatability studies, ability to work for short periods of time in extreme temperatures, ability to wear required personal protective and safety equipment, ability to stand for several hours observing treatability studies and documenting test conditions, ability to lift objects less than 30 pounds, ability to remain alert and vigilant while working around laboratory equipment, and ability to climb stairs or ladders to access equipment for visual inspection.

Salary:

Location A: $51,000 - $69,000
