Departmental Overview

The Department of Recreational Sports offers members of the UC Berkeley community an extraordinary experience to live active and meaningful lives while on campus.

Programs and services range from group fitness, aquatics, adventure trips, drop- in fitness and recreation, intramural sports, sport clubs, personal training, WorkFit, and many other activities. Recreational Sports is enhanced by its indoor and outdoor facilities, including three indoor locations, four pools, five tennis courts, climbing wall, and an outdoor adventure center at the Berkeley Marina.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the day-to-day operations of the climbing wall including opening and closing procedures, equipment inspections, and instruction of climbing courses.
  • Assist in building an inclusive, welcoming, and fun climbing community through individual interactions, programs, and activities.
  • Assist with the prevention of emergencies by monitoring the form and technique of climbers, and enforcing all Climbing and Cal Adventures rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Assist in the development, facilitation, set up and take down of climbing programs and events.
  • Demonstrate safe belaying and climbing practices according to those put in place by Cal Adventures and climbing industry standards at all times.
  • Respond to emergency situations by administering appropriate first aid and/or CPR/AED procedures.
  • Ensure all equipment is used in an appropriate manner that promotes safety and is stored properly.
  • Address customer service related questions in a positive manner.
  • Assist with the maintenance of safety and maintenance logs; keep all necessary reports and documentation in order.
  • Assist in custodial and maintenance tasks for the climbing equipment and facility.
  • Attend all regularly scheduled staff meetings, training days, and workshops.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

  • Ability to attend in-house climbing training program.
  • Ability to interpret and implement proper policies and procedures for climbing area.

Education/Training/Licenses:

  • High school diploma and / or equivalent certification / experience / training.
  • Current First Aid/CPR/AED Certification.

Preferred Qualifications

  • AMGA Climbing Wall Instructor Certification.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $18.07 - $25.00.

  • This is a 12-month, 40%, part-time (16 hours per week), contract position that is not eligible for UC benefits.
  • This position is non-exempt and bi-weekly.
